Is it normal that i had to stop myself laughing at bad news?

I just got told a close friend of the family has cancer, and, I was shocked, but I had to hold back a giggle when I was told, and even when I think about it I get an urge to smile. I am quite freaked out by myself, I told a friend and she thought it was strange. Wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else and, of course if it's normal?

Its usually a way of coping or 'taking in' the situation. For instance, I do the same thing at funerals, or when moments get very serious. I sometimes even have to leave the room so I don't seem rude bursting out laughing during a very serious matter. Others may think it is strange, but in reality, everybody does something for a reason. It is doubtful you or anyone actually thinks subjects like cancer are hysterical.

  • Happens to me. Except i don't hold back. I can't! I'd like to believe that it's just my response to everything, laugh. I hate it because of the glares I get but I really can't control it. When I see or hear bad news my initial response is to laugh.
