Is it normal that i get frequent art blocks?

Being an artist, when a great concept/idea flashes my mind, I suddenly have this urge to draw but as soon as I grab my paper and pencil I suddenly space out. It's so frustrating. I end up scribbling and doodling senseless stuffs instead. Is this normal? Any suggestions to avoid having an art block?

I get that all the time, most of my best pieces of art come from spur of the moment ideas, although I find it hard expressing the idea I have in my mind on paper sometimes. I suggest just write down what you can and just doodle your way from their playing about with ideas =)

When it happens try listening to music that inspires you. But there's no way to avoid the block; it will happen.

I mess around with a lot of adobe photoshop/illustrator and when I have some kinda artist block I just google image something similar to what im trying to do to draw some inspiration from it.

Same happens with me. Search for reffy on the internet. Observe things in life that look interesting to draw, and draw them. Doodle anything and everything.
Also emulate pictures of your fav artists but in your own style or whatever.

Damn, you are a perfect 100% as of now, congrats! I know exactly what you are talking about, but I managed to feel my way through the block by not taking the initial idea too seriously. Because we all know when that time comes with the paper and pencil, and the sound of clock ticking in the background, we tense up, trying to find ways to perfectly execute our ideas. This never happens, so even if the first mark sucks, follow it, and see where it leads. No art is ever bad, I mean what is bad art anyways?

You can also change papers, from the fright of the "WHITE PAPER" to a less mortifying one like sketching inside books or old discarded diaries which already have markings inside. Cheers!

Creativity needs direction. If someone tells you "do whatever" you have trouble with coming up with an idea. If someone says "draw me a sea monster" you get ten ideas.

      it's the opposite for me.
When someone asks me to draw something, it takes time for me to come up with a final output whereas there's no hassle when I'm allowed to draw whatever I want.

I used to keep a notepad with me at all times and whenever I got a feeling of an idea, I'd write out something brief but evocative so I could recall it later. Then, I'd cycle through it all once a day (usually evening... I'm a night owl) and try to find connections between them. What I ended up with often didn't resemble any of the ideas individually, but it led me in some interesting directions.

thanks dappled. I'm also a night owl myself. I usually get my ideas in drawing at night that's why I end up sleeping late.

@: Floydzcloud & dappled: You guys are awesome. I've read a lot of comments from you all over the IIN site and I really enjoy reading your comments and ramblings.^_^

I haven't written anything in three years except for school.

There's no way to get over it except ride it out.
