Is it normal that i get constant racist attitude from black people?

I'm a white guy, I was born and raised in Australia. I learned about the Civil Rights movement in the U.S when I was in High School and I think Martin Luther King is one of the greatest and most important figures in U.S history. The Bill Of Rights and the whole thing about "freedom and liberty for all" is part of why I moved here in the first place.

I've travelled extensively in my time and I've had the opportunity to cultivate friendships with people of all different cultures from all over the world. I judge a person by their behaviour and attitude and nothing more.

But I've made an observation that worries me: I've lived in the U.S for over ten years. And I've NEVER encountered a group of people more openly racist than SOME of the black people in this country. I work in public service, providing internet access to poor folk. Bridging the digital divide. And I'm treated horribly, on a daily basis, by black people who hate me JUST BECAUSE I'M WHITE! Is that not racism? Seems like it is to me.

And it isn't ALL black people. Such a statement would be ignorant and inherently racist in itself. But it happens often enough that I've noticed it.

Anyone else?

This is a VERY well worded question! So many times people will openly talk about this exact same subject and there's some part of it that someone can call racist in itself. But I don't see anything wrong with this question. Putting that aside, it unfortunately is normal. I agree with the 'I judge on character not color' part, and those are my beliefs too. But not everyone does. My opinion is because of what happened so long ago, people hold grudges. There was a time when black people were afraid to walk down a dark alley or afraid to even leave their houses because of the white people. We were fucking scary. But now, it's turned around; white people are now afraid to walk down alley ways, and depending on where you live, afraid to leave your house. If MLK were here today, he would be absolutely disgusted with everyone. He would feel like he died for nothing. I hope that someday his dream comes true, and racism can be something nonexistent. Something that people look back on and think 'we never needed that! Why was that a thing?' ... Like Spam!

Yes sorry but it is normal. Here is what happens and I think its basic psychology. The majority will always fuck with the minority. I have no idea why this is but its true.

If its popular to be white people will make fun of colored people. If being of color they will mock the white man. This has happened with every other minority group that has ever existed. It has gotten to the point I wonder if pitying people is even fucking worth it to begin with.

South-park gave a good example of this. People always jump the fucking band wagon. In south-park they had a episode about being metrosexual. When the kids all became gay friend(Metrosexual) they started fucking with the non gay cooking children and said "Hey you stupid butch kid". Sad but this is how it is. If you are not on top you are on bottom. There is no middle ground.

People do not know how to have rights and privilege without abusing it. You are free to make your own choices and live your life. Since you are given this freedom does not mean you should be dicks to people. We should not laugh at someone for being poor, rich, white, black, brown, yellow, gay, straight or any other colour of the rainbow. We are all just people. LEARN IT, ACCEPT IT, and GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELVES.

Now to all the people who might call me racist over this. FUCK YOU ITS TRUE.

It's mostly true, especially with black people who have a "ghetto" attitude. Some parts of the U.S. have less racist black people than others. Iowa, for instance, seems to have less racists than Wisconsin.

Has anyone considered that there might be an underlining reason behind how some black people act? I have a hard time believing that someone can hate another person just because they look a certain way. Maybe when they see a white person, they wrongly associate negative attributes with the white person based off of bad experiences.

"Maybe when they see a white person, they wrongly associate negative attributes with the white person based off of bad experiences."

Yup. That's racism in a nutshell.

Yeah except, bad experiences for white people is generally "seeing the coloureds on the streets wearing hooded sweatshirts. They probably have a gun"

While bad experiences for black people are generally, "slavery"

From one white person to another: shut the fuck up.

First of all why on earth would you come to America from Australia?!?!!? Isn't Australia one of the happiest countries in the world?? America sucks!

But yeah I do agree that sometimes black people can be very openly racist, which is very hypocritical.

Thanks, I really appreciate your response. I wasn't referring to all black people and maybe I should have made myself more clear I think there are plenty of hypocritical and entitled white people and people in general of all different types.

Its funny how Caucasians the world over have embraced the whole "We are the world" philosophy that chucks race out the window, but then forgets that a lot of the world non white people grow up in enviroments where the old human "Us vs the rest" outlook still holds sway, racism is unfortuanatly very human behavior, but some races are allowed to get away with it because a person who shares their physical characteristics was ounce oppressed by a person who shares the physical charactaristics of the person they hate, thus giving them an excuse

I work with black people, as coworkers and clients. I am a white person. I really couldn't care less about the color of a persons skin, and most every black person I've worked with seemed to accept me in the same way I accept them.
I know a lot about the world and the horrors different groups have inflicted on each other over time. I have a great capacity for empathy and understanding, and a great deal of revulsion at people who judge others by their appearances. I was raised by a very liberal family in a very liberal community at a very liberal time(70's).
I have a new coworker who is 20 years younger than I, and has copped an attitude that I shouldn't be working in the black community simply because I am white and can't possibly understand their experience. This is exceptionally frustrating, because they are judging me on my race and age ("she's and old white lady, so she must be racist"), and not on my work, attitude and knowledge because they haven't even taken the time to have a discussion with me.
Please don't lump all people of the same group together. We are each unique individuals and while there are intolerant jerks in every group, there are also kind and understanding people who are being alienated when they are treated like the jerks you may have experienced, simply because they share physical characteristics with those jerks.

Maybe this is just my own experience but in my interracial relationship, whites have acted the most disgusted by it. Blacks usually support it. Also I've brought my white friends to mostly black events (Church, house parties, weddings, BBQs, concert) and they were welcomed and they had a great time. They didn't mention getting treated differently at all nor did I witness it. When I've gone to mostly white events (Church, house gatherings, picnics, concerts, certain public pools) I've gotten glared at, mocked, insulted, and treated like I had a disease. So at least based off of my life experiences I view things the exact opposite.

I'm from the UK and I find that - of those who are racist in the UK - black people tend to be among the worst [as in most openly disdainful of other colours] by a long shot.

OBVIOUSLY not all black people are racist, and OBVIOUSLY not all racists are black!

On the other hand, I've also noticed that the vast majority of the guests at my workplace are white. Most of the black/Asian staff I've noticed are cleaners, but there are a fair few members of staff in my department and others [just nothing higher up] who are also black.

The good ol', "Black people are being racists too!" accusation. The "Black people used to live in fear, now white people live in fear" statement. Sorry, not buying that, that does not happen. Black people do not and will not harm white people just for being white like I'm hearing, I get sick of people acting scared around black people like they've ever done anything. Have you ever been turned down by a job due to your race, been called ugly due to your skin, had a potential mate outright say they don't like [your race] people even if you're nice, been judged the moment you walk in a room just from your skin, limited on the friends you can make? No? Then you must not be living as a black person. You don't know if the person you are greeting will smile at you or frown. You cannot say that you understand what blacks go through if you are not black.

Yes, no one likes the overly ghetto black people. Yes, not all black people are negative while some really are negative. But for a race that had their history and culture stolen and continue to get judged even when they aren't doing anything wrong, it is understandable to be careful of white people. Not excusing blacks to be negative but people need to own up to what their race does behind the scenes instead of pointing fingers like it doesn't exist.

I haven't seen anyone on here say, "I may not be black, but I understand what they went through." I for one have no idea, only what I've learned.

And as for the "I get sick of people acting scared around black people like they've ever done anything.", are you saying black people haven't done anything wrong? Everyone has. I don't care what color you are, if I'm alone on the streets and 2 white guys with baggy clothes and do rags come up to me, I'll be scared. If two black guys dressed in Sunday best approach me, I won't be scared. It's all about how you carry yourself, and how the media portrays people and their race as a whole. It's fucked up.

My post was more of a defense for black people since people seem to like giving the idea that some black people not liking white people is racist and therefore is hypocritical without first admitting that a lot of unfair things happen in a not so obvious but under-the-rug fashion that people seem to be forgetting. In the "I get sick of" line, of course I didn't mean that black people don't do anything wrong, that is just switching the words around. I already mentioned that some are definitely negative and all races are negative, just as you said. But look at the posts, people are basically saying "Yeah black people can be the most racist of all", but why is that exactly, you'd think they have been through horrible treatment in the past and present that other races can't relate to or something and now have a hard time trusting others.

My main problem is that no one addresses "why" black people "seem" racist and it isn't racism, its being "aware" of what could be. That doesn't mean a black person should straight diss a white person as that is wrong and backwards, yes, but it has happened to black people all the same and in more important parts of life. Don't worry, we're saying the same things, I'm just being more direct about overlooked issues instead of being overly nice.

Ah, that's my bad then, I misread it and got defensive. I'm glad we have the same views then. I'm not saying our view is perfect, but I will say if more people could at least TRY to understand what black people went through, and apply that to how some act today, racism wouldn't be such a problem, at least not between white and black people.
