Is it normal that i gain weight so easily?

Two weeks ago I was 162. Then last week I was 165. This morning I was 168.

I only ran twice last week (and played softball one day). Do you really think that could be why? I thought weight gain was supposed to be a slower process though. Not one week off schedule equals gaining a few pounds.

I think my ideal weight for my body/muscle composure would be around 155. But I'm having a hard time even staying in the 160s when I run five times a week.

I don't really eat a whole lot either. Yesterday I had a PB&J sandwich, a grapefruit, a glass of milk, some yogurt, and then a small chicken salad for dinner. And that's a pretty typical day for me.

I feel like nothing short of starving myself will keep me from getting fat.

    Cardio every day perhaps?
Do you take plenty of dumps? I'll drop a few pounds after a power dump.

My weight sometimes fluctuates like that (though always within a certain range), but then again, I use a really standard *cough* crappy *cough* scale.

What kind of scale do you use? Do you weigh yourself in different clothing? Does your weight fluctuate around a certain range? Do you weigh yourself at the same time everyday? Do you weigh yourself before or after a meal? Do you have a lot of muscle mass?

Weight gain has many variables to it. You also have to factor in your BMI, water retention, diet, et cetera.

Do you think your gaining fat or something? It's probably your muscle mass that's making you gain weight. Which isn't a bad thing if it is. So who cares about your weight if it's muscles growth that's making you heavier.

    • Well I don't really lift or anything, just run, so I wouldn't really expect to be building muscle. I also feel and look a little flabbier in the mirror. And my pants feel a little tighter around my waist.

Interesting.. you run 5 times a week and gaining excess fat? That's not right :s. My only conclusion is your diet plan isn't so good. Do you starve yourself alot?!

        • No I don't really starve myself. But I don't think I'm eating all that much compared to other regular healthy, athletic people either. For the past couple of months I was doing 3+ miles 4-5 times a week and my weight was stable around 162-165. Then it wasn't until recently that I had a few setbacks that knocked me off track a little.

I was still able to do the 3+ miles but only 2-3 times a week, but the weight gain was more than I expected and immediate. It's like I have no slack at all. Every day that I don't run it's a pound or so in weight gain.

i see, im no nutritionist, but i have done some research on why starving yourself is bad, and can actually make you gain weight. your metabolism slows when you starve yourself. its because of our built in survival instincts in our body. your body trys to burn less because its not getting enough food, so its stores in more fat so you can survive. makes sense? so i advise you to eat more frequently.

            • I'm not starving myself, but I am trying to be sensible about what I eat. Where do you draw the line?

I was just at a party over the weekend where tons of food was served. Most people were eating two or three plates worth of things, but I was satisfied with maybe a bit less than one plate. Who's to say that what I was eating was not enough?

I have heard what you said about starving yourself leading to gain weight, but I don't believe that is completely the truth either. I think it's just a way to comfort people into taking a realistic approach to their diets so they don't give up and splurge after a week of intense starvation.

Same here. Some of it is water retention, but it's absolutely astounding at how quickly the pounds pack on. Strength training is the fountain of youth, though cardio is important as well. Recently I've switched my diet to lots of veggies, nuts, some seeds, oats, fruit, water, baked skinless chicken, fish, yogurt, and I must admit coffee, and I haven't felt any hunger and the pounds are slowly dropping.
