Is it normal that i feel totally unprepared for work after graduation?

I just finished my final year of engineering, but I'm not sure if I can make it out there as an engineer. Im not sure if I will be competent enough to do the job, and so far I've read many job descriptions and I don't COMPLETELY satisfy the requirements of all of those jobs, but I do wish to take up some of those jobs... I wouldn't mind the job as long as it's something that I am capable of doing, but I'm really worried that when I start working I'll be given something totally new and tough that I might not be able to cope with and then I'll get fired all too soon. All of my friends seem to know what jobs they want and are confident that they can do it, so am I abnormal?

ps, I didn't get really good grades in university, so should I be even more worried about not being able to get a job, or keep a job after getting it? Or should I just go into some other field of work instead which is simpler than engineering, since they say engineers can diversify into other fields easily?

Cold feet happens when being faced with the reality of what-is. If you get on the job and don't understand something, simply ask a question. It's a learning process no matter what degree you have. There will always be more to learn. Every employer, especially one is a field such as engineering should know this. My father is an engineer, and he definitely isnt the sharpest tool in the shed, but he knows his job. Quote from my father "there is nothing wrong with learning son, if you have a question just ask"
Which is true. He was trying to teach me how to do drafting for pipelines. It's the same principle for your situation. I know hes my father and not my boss but, your future boss has been where you are. He/she will understand. Don't sweat it. Hope this helped

Don't you worry, you don't need to be competent to get a job today. You just need the right hook ups and to make it perfectly clear that even if you fuck up there is going to be profit for everybody. You'll do just fine.

I was the same way you are. And it was worste for me because I messed up in college, I messed up bad. If I found a decent job and I was able to keep it, you can do it too. Don't be nervous, be confident. I was very nervous after college I thought I was not gonna make it. Gladly I did. So don't doubt yourself.

In your situation it seems like it would be best not to stress over it, as long as your good at what you do I'm sure whoever hires you will understand that you don't know how to do everything they ask and wouldn't mind teaching you. Your not abnormal for having a bit of anxiety about going into the career you've been working at for a while, even your friends who are "confident" might be shaking on the inside at the thought of going into their careers. Imo it would be ignorant to go into a simpler career before even giving your main goal a chance. It might be wise to just give engineering a chance and see how things go, than maybe if that doesn't work out think about diversifying. Just my two cents...
