Is it normal that i feel like people aren't voting on here correctly?

This site is called "Is it normal", not "Is it acceptable", and I see plenty of people asking "Is what I'm doing normal?" when it's obviously not, yet they still get normal votes because it's acceptable. Sometimes people even comment "Not very common, but I voted normal" or something like that, uh, you just said it's NOT normal, not common = not normal, as in the majority of people don't do it. Doesn't make it bad, but I feel like people vote normal on things that are obviously not done by the majority of people simply because they'd be socially acceptable, not normal.

I see it as kind of the opposite. Just one example I can think of is "IIN my bf/gf is cheating on me/not spending time, etc etc"
Many will vote not normal even though these things are very common. I guess it goes both ways.

Stop being so pedantic and intelligent and making sense, nobody got time for that around here.

Well ok I will explain this justification using psychology. There is different fields of psychology you can pursue. My favourite happens to be abnormal psychology. Abnormal psychology is when a persons mindset or brain does not follow a normal thought process and does not exhibit normal bahaviour. Meaning people who are insane, or slow, autistic or has learning disabilities. Now people are voting on what is considered a normal mindset not what is common. Now being a pedo would fall under abnormal psychology. Being a pedo is not normal. So people are not going to vote as normal when it falls under abnormal.

I think that people should only vote normal if it happens to them

      I Disagree.
Just because you dont have the experiance doesn't mean you vote "its not normal"

I know what you mean, but it's not like the two concepts can be completely separated. If you want to be strict with the normal=common interpretation then the correct answer to the question "IIN that I'm Mexican?" is "no". But I think most people would agree that's a stupid answer.

The only problem i have is that more and more of the IINs relate little to the body of text or completely contradict each other.

    Eg

    'IIN to wear blue tshirts?'

I like to wear my t shirts inside out but my bf thinks it looks perpendicular. Should I break up with him? Also it's his birthday soon and I don't know if should get him green curtains.

I think everyone has a different definition of 'normal.' I think it could mean common or acceptable, but not sure which is the better definition.

It would be much more accurate if people answered in the sense of "Do you also do this?" rather than "Is this okay?"
That way, the result will accurately reflect how common the poster's urge/condition/obsession is rather than the portion of readers that won't call him/her a freak for it.
How hard would it be to just add a comment, "Not normal, but that's fine."

Yeah I see what you're saying. But I'm pretty sure the meaning of this site is to find out if what you do or how you are is acceptable. Like sure, it's not the exact meaning of normal, but the point is so people don't feel like a freak because of something that they obviously don't see every day.
If everything here were actually normal, people would see it daily and they wouldn't have to ask if it's normal. So I understand what you're saying, but I think that's more the point.

I respond to "Is It Normal?" posts in this exact same way. The question running through my mind has basically been just that: "Do I also do this?" If I have a gauzy answer, I might even skip voting to comment, in order to optimize the accuracy of information for the OP.

Seems as if this voting style isn't normal after all. :P

Haha it would make the answers confusing to some people. I have a few friends that sometimes just can't drop things or can't stop thinking about them. And they just want to know it's okay. And if they were told it's not normal, but it's fine, they would still be completely paranoid about it, and keep searching for ways to either change them self or to find them self acceptable.

          That is an interesting point.

I suppose people like myself must just accept using the site the way it is, since it would be harder for them to adapt to it if everyone voted like I do.

It may be better if Normal was separated into these two categories, but I suppose you will just have to ask it that way using a poll.

Maybe just think of the site as "Is It Acceptable" instead of "Is It Normal".
But if you can't then you can just stick with commenting if you think things are acceptable or not.

I think most people on here no what's normal in terms of like the unwritten kind of rules we have in society, but like when people vote things like incest is normal and having sexual feelings towards a family member is normal, I really think 95 percent of those people no its not normal and vote yes for what ever twisted reason.

None of us on here are really normal. We all have a quirks and different mindsets. What society considers to be "normal" most likely won't coincide with the ideals on here. It all depends.

I was rather confused, because you had asked a second, different question. This might be the cause of why people aren't voting on here correctly, in some circumstances. I think that the key here is to ask explicit questions that are not confusing or that can be misinterpreted. In some instances, posters use negatives or worse, double negatives which can become very confusing for the reader.

          I'm not the OP.
I didn't realise that your comment was intended for me.

Those questions in my first comment are rhetorical questions. They are intended to make the reader think, rather than prompting a response.

What the userbase of this site considers normal often does not represent what society considers normal.
Surely most of the people on here are not normal...?
Surely it can't be true that more than half the world population regularly smokes weed and engages in incest...?
I'm sure many users join to come to ask a question about something that they know is not normal and want to know what others think.
