    I don't think it's normal to feel better with no sleep. Your brain needs time to rest.

      acually your brain and your heart are the only things that do not rest. =}

        (I should have phrased my comment better :/ Sorry)

        In deep sleep the brain only exhibits delta waves - 1 of 4 wave types. Conscious thought ceases and it's understood our long-term memory is no longer active. Certain functions within the body are slowed (the digestive system), and blood flow to the brain is reduced.

        However, which I was wrong to imply is not the case, the subconscious is still very much active - the delta wave is slow but high amplitude. Many of the details of what the brain does in this phase remains a mystery, though there are theories relating to memory processing. A variety of hormones are mostly released during sleep (HGH, testosterone etc.) obviously initiated by the brain.

        So I was wrong to say bluntly the brain does rest. What I should have said is brain activity in the cortex 'rests', or our consciousness 'rests', whilst the subconscious remains active. Only part of the brain is resting during deep sleep.

        That actually gave me a good incentive to read up on sleep cycles again and it goes to show I was a little rusty :D So thank you.

          no problem acually the only reason i implyed that was to see if somone knew the absolute truth about regular sleep patterns and u pasted even though i still have a little feeling that u copied and pasted that but ill let that go...(if you did anyway)

            I should say what I said in regards to the heart still applies, it does tend to slow during sleep below the waking resting-rate by around 8%.

            It's not copied and pasted, but it isn't entirely from memory. There are a couple of good sources for information about sleep I'd recommend:

            http://www.sleepfoundation.org/
