Is it normal that i drive on auto-pilot?

sometimes, when i drive, i feel that i drift off, and i'll find that i am home, i am fully aware of where i'm at, and will stop at stop-lights and stop-signs etc. but, i feel that i am on auto-pilot, or something, its quite odd, is it something that has to do with driving? and if it is...is it common? sometimes on the highway during broad daylight i can go miles without realizing it, and it kinda scares me, or i drive home from work, and i get home, and i don't really remember half of the drive...is this normal? or is it me just being not a very responsible driver?

I do this all the time. I find it a little scary but I know I'm following most if not all traffic laws. I think it's more like I have a short attention span while driving and I see just the road ahead of me, but when I get home I'm like ummm which streets did I take to get here? Lol but I think that's pretty normal a few friends of mine do it as well

i do this i love driving and i love cars i do about 200 miles every weekend for pleasure visiting places or jus driving around, probably cos theres nothing else exiting in my life lol. there are 2 types of drivers, people like me and people that just drive to work and find driving boring, i would say that you are like me. driving is good for reflection, thought, chilling out, listening to music, also the thrill of speed and country roads, but mainly the freedom of being able to do what the hell you like, you are so limited and trapped in life until you get in the car and then you are who you want to be :)

It's because your'e life has become mundane and you have followed a routine for too long, do something exciting.

This is not always the case.

What is really happening is that you are so familiar with the drive that your brain can perform it without any input from you. Kind of like when breath you don't need to tell your lungs to breath they just do. The problem is that this could lengthen your reaction time causing an accident so its best to try and focus on the road and check your mirrors often, anything to keep your attention on driving.

I won't say it's perfectly normal because it can be a little dangerous, but almost every single person I know (and myself included) does it multiple times per week. It's a weird sort of like half-hypnosis almost that you're under when you're driving sometimes and when I'm on longer road trips, it's easy to do.
