Is it normal that i drink to feel okay?

i've been suffering with major depressive disorder for virtually my entire life. the only time i don't feel sad is when i am drunk. whenever something goes wrong, i get drunk to feel better. is this normal or is this borderline alcoholism?

Somehow I don't really think that this is okay. I'm sorry for you =(

While alcohol may make you feel better in the short term, you're really only causing yourself damage in the long run. I suggest getting further help for your condition if you find yourself resorting to that. I suffer from clinical depression as well, and I've been fighting a very difficult battle with self-injury for a few years now, but getting help for it was certainly a good decision, in hindsight. Be brave and know that you aren't alone. Don't be afraid to reach out for help; it's really one of the bravest things a person can do. And whatever you do, don't lose hope. <3

It's normal as in, every alcoholic does the same thing, but it's definitely not healthy. You'll stunt yourself emotionally.

By the time you stop drinking you will have to re-live and deal with all the emotions associated with what you're tying to cover up right now. Stop labeling yourself and take responsibility.

Borderline alcoholism. Sorry chap; find another way to distract yourself, such as talking to a loved one. Or doing your hobby, or listening to music.

You don't know what came first, the drinking making you depressed or even if the depression came first and you are medicating it with a depressant, you only will feel worse and be grouchy in the morning and make people pissed off and then you will be more depressed and drink tons of coffee then have to drink more again and never get anything done and it's bad for your health. You can't really function like that it's depressing. So what are you going to do. I guess if you want to stop you should to an AA meeting there are tons of people like you young people's meetings too. The sooner the better but it's never too late. Particularly now so many people have and know someone that has this issue because most people have blown their tolerance at a young age and screwed up royally at least some family member so it's not anything unusual.

no its not 'normal' or healthy. But dont worry you are definitly not alone. I suggest you should try talking to someone and reaching out for help because the lower you go the harder it is to get back up. Good luck and I hope you get well soon :)

Alcohol is a depressant as well, so it sounds like you're masking your disorder with another.
