Is it normal that i don't want to be retired?

I am a 55-year-old woman and have been teaching for 34 years. My children, one is 29 and the other is 21, and my husband do want me to be retired now. however, i am afraid that i will be stuck at home till i die. my mom lives 800 miles away from me and all my siblings live in the same city which is 6 hours away from me. I have few friends here but not many. My husband has been retired for a year now but sometimes i think i will be bored if i spend my whole time with him. My sister told me that she is planning to get pregnant in September. That made my day so i will be a grandma after one year if everything goes well. What do you think i should do? what would you do if you were in my shoes? Thank you for your help in advance.

Are you mad? What have you been waiting for? 5

  • 55 does seem quite young to retire and why would you if you didn't have to. When pensions/retirement plans were first introduced to the working class, people did not live as long as they do today. However, even though the average lifespan has increase dramatically since then, the age of retirement has not.

Make a choice that makes you happy. Do it for yourself--not your husband, nor your children, nor the rest of your family. It may not be your time to retire just yet, but it may be time to put your own happiness first.

By the way, you might want to know that at least three quarters of the users/voters on this website are under the age of 25 and many have difficulty contemplating life beyond 30 years of age.

Seems like someone dropped a brick on you when you were little. Probably on purpose.

Hey, I don't think there should be an age limit to doing whatever you love. You can't ever be too old for it. :)

Just retire whenever you feel ready.

Take a part time/casual job. Just something that gets you out of the house and talking to other people, customer service, something like that. Semi retirement.

What they said^ 55 is young to retire in my opinion. Actually, the word retire isn't even in my vocabulary. I'll probably be working til the day I die and that's ok with me, sort of. If you enjoy what you're doing and are still capable, keep doing it.
