Is it normal that i don't understand this?

I don't understand why everyone cares about being "Normal" when there's nothing really normal about life. Why should people conform to society's expectations and follow the status quo just so they'll be normal? What exactly is "Normal"? Or is that merely a made-up term to pick at people who are different from everyone else? In my opinion, there's no such thing as normality and people should be themselves more than try to be normal.

    When you say "there is no such thing as normality, people should just be themselves", did you ever consider that people ARE being themselves? That normality is the result? Normality is simply the common, the average.

    We are all human, and - whilst we might consider ourselves unique and vastly different from one another in the context of our society - most of us are extremely similar. Most of us have similar wants and needs, similar basic aspirations. Most of us are raised in a similar way, have similar formative experiences. That inevitably leads to an average, a medium. Normality is the medium.

    Because society needs to function like a well-oiled machine for most of us to attain our wants and needs, we are threatened by spanners in the works. Hence there is an expectation to conform to try and maintain the machine (the machine is really just us, we make up society, it's not imposed upon us, it's not some third party). So people might be cautious, hostile even, towards things particularly outside the norm. That's perfectly natural. It's also perfectly natural to embrace things outside the norm - because sometimes we think perhaps there's something better, more exciting than what we've got. That's also normal.

  • As long as you aren't seriously harming others I believe you should be able to do whatever it is that makes your life worth living.

    I think by normal they mean fits the social construct of society. Not normal as in right or good.

    You're sweet. And right, but people, specially kids, like to know if their feelings are okay or some kind of disorder

    It's funny people like you say that but are usually the same type to avoid someone who is "weird"...

    I see what you're saying, but it can be a pretty anxiety provoking to feel very different from everyone else around you. People are adapted to want to fit in, and not fitting in causes (most) people distress. You see everyone else around you acting happy, and you wonder "am I still normal if I'm not happy too? Am I the only one?". I think that's a perfectly natural thing to wonder. (Most) people want to be part of a community and it's much harder to be part of a community if you're alone in your thoughts.

    Knowing or not whether your situation is normal helps you decide whether you're getting the best you can out of life. If you're not normal, then you know that can probably do better and need to try doing something different. But if you are normal then you know throwing it all away is probably a bad idea because you're unlikely to get anything better than you have now. You presuppose the idea that being normal is the thing people strive for, that being considered normal is the desired outcome. Sometimes it isn't and people just want to know what the truth of their situation is.

    People would want to be normal in order to not be frowned upon by others around them.

    Ok, well since you've given the rest of us such a cadaver of a question, let me ask you this:

    Q: How does the survival of a little dingleberry such as yourself effectively disprove the theory of Evolution, once and for all?

    A: Evolution is such an endless process that it's almost fun to see the variety and utter folly that is required of it to push out something as inutterably beautiful as Albert Einstein or Werner Heisenberg, when it is ironically able to pump out millions of non/backward thinkers such blathery inevitably produces! Next thing, people who think as blatantly anti-scientifically as you do will be telling us to stand on our fairy tale god mother's foal's mare's magically frozen=in=time yet unbelievably silken locks. There, according to blathering fools such as yourself, will the blood letting take place, Gauzy foal #1 will gingerly and happily vomit a fresh supply of Strawberry flavored strengthening gelly which endues the wearer not only to be exactly what he or she WANTS to be, but also the brainyness and maturity perhaps to match the beauty of the brains of both Einstein and his two decently wired mates(due to the obnoxious length of this sentence, the writer is no longer in enough control of her mind to punctuate properly. Henceforth random punctuation shall take the place of well placed punctuation?}

    1. In our case history! the above nonsense never does quite take place as= no sense[ no joy` alas! no purpose or legitimacy ever again took place ojjjjjj . our ? wonderfully storied language again*##

    and THat is THE story oF and EaRtH gone wild.+++

    I see what you're saying. It's odd, really, since we're all naturally different in some way. I guess, it could be partially due to our genetics - someone who is abnormal may be considered to not have as compatible genes with the other. In a different way, people who are similar in their interests can relate better to one another but someone who isn't the same will have a harder time becoming part of the group.

    Although, I, personally mainly come to this site with stories for advice and to hear if there are any others like me so I can learn how they dealt with the same problem (rather than to conform to the idea of normality).

    Totally! Fuck conformity. Only problem with that though is that if everyone was a nonconformist, we'd all be conforming to nonconformity. O.o
