Is it normal that i don't understand the appeal of drugs and alcohol?

I am a late-twenty-something daughter of two IV drug users who both recently died as a result of their long-term addictions. However, I have never done any drugs and can count on one hand the times I have been drunk in my life. I just really do not understand the appeal of why people want to drink and do drugs. The only thing I have ever seen from it is negative consequences. I do not understand how it is supposed to be "fun" in any way. What's fun about passing out all over the place and destroying your body? Because of this I am somewhat socially isolated because so many people want to spend their time wiped out on something. I like to do so many other things that are fun but people look down on me and don't want to hang out with me because I don't want to get messed up.

    Because you've never done drugs.

But that's a good thing because you need all the brain cells you can get if that answer was eluding you.

You mean addiction, running out of money, health issues, relationship/family troubles, possible chance of arrest or even death?

Oh, such a shame that I'll never be able to have all of that! How awful for me! D=

I couldn't agree with you more about the hard drugs and downers. But I've been a pot head since the 60's and really enjoy "turning on" as I prefer to think of it. I don't enjoy getting "stoned" or "wasted". I enjoy turning on to whatever I'm doing, be it working on an engine, listening to music, studying or sailing. I am addicted to life so "going down" on depressants, or hard drugs seems pointless and I need my body too much to use coke, speed, crack or E.
As for alcohol, the effects are pretty much a downer after a while so I'd rather not get drunk. But there are drinks out there that taste really good. There are literally thousands of mixed drinks to choose from. I will not drink Bud, Miller or any other watered down, tasteless horse piss Americans call beer. But there are fine tasting beers out there, such as Newcastle Brown, Bass Ale and some like Guinness. Microbreweries abound now and there are lots of interesting beers to choose from. You don't need to drink yourself into a stupor, but I'm sure you could find something you actually like the taste of, which might make you more comfortable when your friends are drinking. And since drinking premium alcohol is more expensive, you can drink less than everyone else pleading poverty and fewer people will buy you a drink, so YOU can control your intake.

There is an addictive personality type. You don't have it, fortunately. If they give up drugs, they tend to start up with alcohol. If they quit alcohol, next they are gambling. I don't know why they have this need to get an addict's high one way or another.

In addition to what everyone else has said, make sure you draw a clear line between "addiction" and "doing drugs". The only "drug" I ever use is alcohol, and I do so because drinking alcohol in a social situation with good friends is fun. It would be fun if no-one was drinking too, just a different type of fun. Have you really *never* seen *any* positive consequences of drugs? Have you never seen drunk people out having fun and being raucous? That's a positive consequence right there. You're right to say there's no positive consequences of being addicted, but using any drug in moderation has pretty obvious short-term positive consequences: it's fun.

Here's another thing to get straight: refusing to drink or use other drugs does not socially isolate anyone unless the only places you can think of to socialise are places where everyone drinks. Believe it or not, there are other sober people in the world too! :O Go out and find some of them! :) You'll have a great time.

I'm not advocating going out and getting drunk or high every night, mind you. If not using any drugs (apart from caffeine, which absolutely does count) suits you, go for it. I just find it hard to see how you could fail to understand why people use drugs.

I am an ex meth user. I can tell you why I did drugs. Escapism and the effect it had on my art. I draw cartoons and comics and while I was high I could channel my imagination straight into my work, it was a level of focus and concentration that actually put me inside what I was drawing. I was more addicted to that than the drug itself, but of course the two went together.
Also people need "crutches" in their life. When life gets too much, some people have healthy ways of dealing with it (going for a long run, exercise etc.) But others, less motivated, do not. Their crutches are drugs and alcohol.
I hope I have shed a little bit of light on this for you.
