Is it normal that i don't understand drug abuse and addiction?

I have never been able to understand why some people get so addicted to drugs. Now I have tryed several different drugs to see what they're like and I don't understand why anyone would want to do them all the time. Why do people want to take something that impaires them? I would rather be on top of things and sharp minded (and no, speed does not make you sharp, it makes you stupid and delusional). Sure I do like to have a few drinks or take a few puffs from weed on an occasion (mostly just while doing chores around the house, or something active) but to do this on a regular basis just seems dumb as fuck. What seems the stupidest to me is when people want to get fucked up and just watch tv or some other mindless activity. Anytime ive been fucked up I want to be active and everyone else just wants to be lazy and stay inside. Anyways I do understand the appeal of being intoxicated on occasion while doing something fun such as fishing, riding bikes, going to the karaoke bar, or even going for a walk, but to sit around getting intoxicated for no reason on a regular basis to make yourself more mindless seems stupid. Maybe I just know too many drug addicts.

Not everyone has an addictive personality. I don't and never had a problem with drinking or drug use. But I have known people who do and just because I don't experience it like they do, doesn't make it okay for me to judge their habits.

It's good not to understand it in a way, you don't have that problem. I'm not addicted to anything but still I do understand, having been through some bad shit in my life, I understand why so many people would use to get away from trauma or suffering.

Just not for me. I have things to do, I'm still young. I might be fucked up from what happened to me, but I can't just give up. I may have my cigarettes to deal with, and that's an addiction too, but the moment I give up my dreams and goals to doping myself out is the moment I lost, and let the people who hurt me win. Never let them win.

For your own sake, I'm glad that you don't understand addiction. If you do want to understand it, without experiencing it, read the biographies of people who have suffered with it, and also research the psychology of it.

Sounds to me like you just don't like the activities of a lot of stoner types. I had a friend like you once. He was always ruining my buzz by wanting to go hiking or some other stupid outdoor activity. He was in denial too. Got loaded just as much as me but accused me of being an addict on account that I'm kind of a loaf. Glad he moved far away.

I've never understood it either, known lots of drug addicts too. I've tried plenty of drugs, it was fun to do once in awhile but i cant imagine being fucked up all the time. I want to have a sober mind most the time, and im like you, when im drinking or doing a drug im very active an want to do things =D i guess i dont have an addictive personality, never had a problem quitting smoking or needed caffine lol

it's probably about the "addictive personality". I don't understand too much about it, but personally -I agree, I never had any problem quitting smoking, trying drugs and boozing for months in a row.. Seems to me that everyone can just say "oh fuck it" and never do it again.

People who are obsessed with getting drunk or high tend to have underlying problems. Some get into addiction accidentally, but still it's either an underlying problem or the use itself causes a problem that they can't solve themselves on their own. Social anxiety being one, low self esteem being another.
