Is it normal that i don't like to be called someone's gf?

Is it normal that I don't like to be called someone's gf. It's like whenever I start going out with a guy I like everything goes great...until he calls me his gf. The minute the word "girlfriend" comes out of his mouth I immediately lose feelings for the guy. This has happened to me with a couple of guys. I'd go out with them and I'd really like them, but once they say I'm their gf I'd kinda get disgusted with them. I know some people have a fear of commitment but this is ridiculous. Maybe it's just the word that throws me off....idk.

What if they said partner? Or other half? Or significant other? Or mate? Or just girl?

Is it the word or the idea?

It's just the word I have a problem with. I like being someone's gf and the idea of being their gf, I just don't like them calling me that. I'm fine with things like sweetie or baby...I actually like those. It's weird, I know.

  • It's not the term you have a problem with, you have attachment and possession issues. Deep down you don't have strong positive feelings for these guys.

My fiance and I call each other "sweetie" in public and it works just fine.

In private I call him other things.

I always thought it was weird that our language appears to assign ownership to the people we go out with.

It's always "MY girlfriend" or "MY girl". I just think it's weird but it's pretty hard to not use these kinds of language. So I just use it and don't worry too much about it.

You got me thinking there. There's another way to see this. It's a bit like the Hahn-Banach theorem, which is the extension theorem proving that a linear functional defined on a subspace of a vector space and dominated thereon by a sublinear function defined on the entire space has a linear extension still dominated by the sublinear function.

In short, the ownership is of the bond, not the woman. We imply more than we mean. If we drop the implication, the term is okay. Because it's shorthand for "the woman with which I pursue a relationship which belongs to us both". The relationship is ours, the entities involved aren't.

Haha I have the same problem... But with the word "baby" or "babe" it makes me feel disgusted, or it makes me feel immature, and I don't know why. I like "mate" or "partner".
