Is it normal that i don't like the word "depressed" being overused?

I have a friend who uses the word "depressed" to describe everything. She always says, "Oh, I've been feeling sort of depressed lately" or "this place is so depressing" or "it was the most depressing movie ever." Depression isn't something to be taken lightly, and it annoys me when it's used as a casual adjective. IIN?

The word depress existed long before the medical diagnosis of depression. It certainly still has it's use beyond medical terminology!! When someone says depressing, they just mean it's dreary, dark, gloomy, etc they don't mean that it's causing them to spiral towards suicide. It's not using the word lightly, it's using it how it was intended to be used.

I agree if someone want's to refer to the medical usage of the word they can make that clear by saying "clinical depression" or "serious depression".

I agree. Depression is an overused word just like the word love is.

  • If they were using the term "clinically depressed" as a descriptor, then ya I think it'd be annoying - just like the turds that say they have OCD when they don't really.

But the word "depressed" is not that bad or overused.

Yes, those people who make light of OCD are the ones who annoy me: "I like my surroundings to be neat and organised, therefore I have OCD." No, you don't.

And we can't forget the people who always claim to be "bi-polar" just because they have bad attitudes. They are so annoying!

It's really annoying, depression is very serious and people just throw the word around. In fact many words have come to this terrible fate. Love used to be a meaningful word and now people say it on the first date/or meeting. Depression is a sorrow even greater than sorrow, and it's also a metal disorder. One more example is not as serious but safety.
People say things like it's 100% safe when really it's more unstable than an old piece of wood. Hopefully she'll figure out depression isn't funny or cool to say.

No shit . I hate it I totoally agree you are completely right they call every kid who isnt lazy sitting on sofa all day ADD or ADHD . you can be depressed but not have depression ? Depression is not a illness if you are sad for reasons like " Your mom died " does not mean you have a mentel illness you are just sad you do not need to be hopped up on Fukn pills . Also any one with OCD I do not think needs to be fixed most of them are healthier than the rest of us .

There are many words that people overuse. Often without having a proper diagnoses or understanding the condition. People often overuse "OCD", "ADHD/ADD", Depression, etc.
When things are overused or used wrong, eventually they are bound to become annoying.
