Is it normal that i don't get cavities?

I'll be honest here. I don't brush my teeth religiously, in fact, I brush a few times a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have to do it more, I already know.

Thing is, I don't get cavities. I know people my age who brush and floss all the time, and they have 3 or 4 of em!

I used to eat a lot of sugar too.

  • I'm 35 years old and I JUST got my first cavity this winter. I brush twice a day and don't eat a lot of sweets or drink soda.

I quit brushing my teeth after brushing for many years religiosly and still having a ton of cavities. havnt brushed in years and all my dentist check ups i brush before i go in and thats it. the dentist think i brush regularly because i havnt had cavities since i stopped brushing. I inherited my anti-brushing teeth from my mother who hasnt had a cavity since she stopped brushing as well. call me weird i guess

So far you are lucky and picked your parents well. However, for reasons of hygiene, brush your teeth and see the dentist once or twice a year. It's not nearly as bad as it was, say in the 1950's when I experienced dental horror stories.

  • I think it's normal, because I'm the same. But everyone tells me how weird it is that i've never had one.

I brush once a day, sometimes i might miss a day or two. :p

Your case is most likely due to a process known as water fluoridation.

Most developed countries add a small amount of fluoride to their public water supply. Fluoride is scientifically proven to reduce tooth decay. Essentially, anytime you drink water, or most beverages that contain treated water, it helps fight against cavities.

Don't worry it's safe. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control listed water fluoridation as one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century.

More information can be found here:

I don't get them either. My dentist said that cavities happen in an acidic environment so people whose saliva has a high acidity content get more cavities. People who seem to get no cavities are the ones with non-acidic saliva. You should still brush though (and floss) or your mouth will smell really bad.

Omg, you are sooooo lucky!! I brush my teeth 3 times per day, rinse with mouth wash AND floss... and yet every time I go to the dentist, they find more and more cavities :( I have also given up A LOT of sugary foods. I eat a lot of crappy tasting "health" food. Yet I still get cavities like there's no tomorrow. I don't understand it!

But you know, you might wanna start brushing your teeth more often, since eventually this will cause problems... and I'm sure your breath doesn't smell too pretty.

Its the amount of a certain strain of bacteria in your mouth which is passed from mother to child that causes cavities. If your seriously brushing 3x/daily and flossing daily, have your dental hygienist check to see if your doing it correctly. Use Act or Listerine Total Care 2x/daily. Also something to think about when you have kids don't let your saliva get into their mouths by sharing spoons, pacifier, or something even kissing if your not careful.

  • I was the same way growing up. The only reason I get cavities now I believe is because I drink a shitload of soda. Although I brush normally now, I used to not brush as much and my teeth were fine as well. It is more based upon genetics instead of personal care. I have seen people brush three times a day and live a clean life and still have a tooth problem.

It depends more on your luck instead of care, but still brush your teeth when you can to at least try and break dumb luck.

yes it's mostly about genetics, but you if you dont have the genes, you need to practice better oral HyGENE. i have always eaten a lot of chocolate and I was a pretty dirty kid that often skipped brushing my teeth at night. I'm 42 now and I still dont have a single cavity. Just dumb luck. My mom is the same way.

How old are you? You probably will start to get cavities eventually, my sister and I never got cavities as children even though we never brushed our teeth but when we were about 18 we started to get lots of them.

you are lucky, but cavities aren't the only reason you brush. the dentist can explain it to you.
