Is it normal that i don't care for close friends?

I have people I'm friendly with. I'll talk with them at Brown University, where I'm getting my Journalism major. I work well with people in group work. I know I'm socially adept because I talk normally and I've been told I have a good sense of humor.

But I just never want to hang out with any of these people! I think they're all pretty, well, uninteresting. I wish I knew more interesting people. I prefer to do independent things when I get back to my dorm with my dormmate that I rarely speak with. I like writing, film study, etc.

So is that normal or what?

This reminds me a bit of Catcher In The Rye.

i'd hope that if you call someone a "close" friend you'd care for them at least a little bit.

Well they're friends of convenience then, not "close friends". They just happen to be there, and you, being a normal person, can communicate with them in a friendly manner.

"Socially adept" means you are highly skilled in socialising; just because you can "talk normally" and have been told you have a good sense of humour doesn't mean you're a 'social butterfly'.

Why don't you try joining some of the University societies? There must be ones for writing and film, see if you can find like minded people outside of your course that you get on with better.
