Is it normal that i do not want to be a part of this society?

Hello. I'm not here to find out whether what I'm feeling is normal. I know my sentiments and actions are rather rare and I'm fine with that. Instead, I'm here to find out whether there are those that feel similarly to me so I know I'm not alone. Your attention please.

I feel out of place in this modern American society. Let me start from the top. I've always grown up idolizing the outcasts from society. Tyler Durden from Fight Club taught me the non-importance of materialism. Aleister Crowley, the "Wickedest" Man Alive, told me to Love and be true to my own self. Ray Bradbury, who wrote Fahrenheit 451, showed me the character of Clarisse McClellan, who in turn showed me it was okay to be different, sometimes even crucial to be different, despite what society thinks of you.

I'm 20 years old. I'm male. I never liked fads. I think facebook is outrageously fake. I don't care for the latest iphone. I'm not looking to get my rocks off 24/7. I don't watch TV, listen to radio, or go to the cinema anymore. The contents have become too lackluster. Even Discovery Channel is spewing out shit.

I look around me and I see degradation. I see an entire generation lost in materialism, narcissism, and hidden insecurities. I walk the streets to find people drowning in their tiny screens, chatting away the petty events of a night that only matters in their own heads. I hear 11 year old girls talking about drinking unknown beverages with their boyfriends at parties. Slaves to media brainwashing. Hedonistic sex. I see government incompetencies, economic unfairness, and social unawareness. Cultural and artistic dissolution. Borderline illiteracy because of texting. This is Generation Y. I fear Generation X will be worse. As will subsequent generations.

I've met a few who share the same ideas. I've realized intellectuals privy to multiple cultures can relate well. I want to change things. The media is the messenger of culture. But how can one person change the media of a country? Am I normal? No. Nor would I want to be. The world is built on revolutionaries. If you feel the same, leave a comment friend.

Then get a good education, get a decent job, get a passport and go discover the world and find yourself a society that you do want to be part of. :)

Keep hope alive! You are not alone, there are many people who want the same things you do. And it can feel overwhelming when you look at the products of society. This is one of the issues the Occupy movement tried to shine a light on. The whole world is feeling the need for this change, but change takes time...and organization. (And it's a lot like herdng cats.)

Ask yourself what you feel most passionate about and seek out a group of people who feel the same way. Keep it local. People may think you're weird, but who cares? I tend to be a snob about these things, as well as my friends.

People don't understand that we are just animals. Damn I wish I was a cat or something.

  • I get what you are saying. However, aleister crowley truly was an incredibly wicked man. One of the few people who I can confidently say was possessed by demons. There is no doubt about it. Don't follow any of his "teachings", you will rot in hell. The other figures you mentioned are good but don't ever follow crowley. he was a bad, bad man

You sound much like a friend of mine, even down to the mention of Fight Club, haha. Oh man, you don't know how much anguish I've suffered due to having a similar perspective as you. It's both a gift and curse the see these truths about society. I fear the future generations as well. But I also understand that we live in a multi faceted culture that, believe it or not, still possesses some good. We just have to find it, and contribute in the best way we can.

I think humanity is going downhill. I don't think Television is a bad thing, but we do watch way too much of it. It can be informative for news and documentaries. The radio has news channels and classical music. We spend too much time with devices but they, in themselves, aren't actually a bad thing, they're just used in bad ways. I think it should be mandatory to take classes in philosophy and ethics. As well as classes in emergency survival and care of the environment. And I think it should be mandatory to spend at least three hours a day in which you can't use electronics. You'd have to read a book or do crafts, or actually go see your friends instead of texting them, or even better, go outside and actually explore your world. And it would be great if electricity was turned off for everything except necessary health and safety things by the power company.

That seems pretty normal to me. It sounds like you should lighten up a bit, though.

You talk about someone "chatting away the petty events of a night that only matters in their own heads," but how do you know how petty they are? And if they're chatting to someone about it, then it probably does not only matter in their own heads.
You talk about cultural and artistic dissolution, but are you sure people weren't saying the same things 20 years ago? And are you sure, things are actually getting worse?

I think, if you want to be irritated by stupidity or lack of erudition in society, then it is easy to find examples. I think it has been so before and will be so in the future.

On the matter of the world being built on revolutionaries, shouldn't there be a society that wants to change? You can't change the world. Worry more about living your own life.

When the ideal is to have sex with everything you can and do nothing but drink and party, bullying those you think you are above. While following anything the celebrities tell them. Yes it is normal.
