Is it normal that i dislike swearing?

It just seems so pointless to say a swear word instead of any other descriptive word that could be said. I never swear. It just seems like smoking - ie: all the rebelious kids do it, sorta, and i just don't want to be someone who swears. I find it offensive and simplistic to use a swear word and rather rude. Is this normal?

you're one of the few who have been brought up with manners, congratulations as you are better than normal.

I'm totally with you on that. I hate when people cuss too...why use the f-word, the s-word, and a bunch of other bad things when there are PLENTY of "good" words to use? Instead of saying something's "f-d up," people should say something's "messed up, goofed up." Instead of the s-word there's always "crud," "mess," "stuff," "junk." The occasional d-word and h-word don't necessarily bother me, but I can't stand for people to use the f-word, the s-word, the gd-word, slang terms for private parts...anything R-rated or that wouldn't be used on the radio, so to speak. They may just be words, but I personally hate them with a passion, and I do not care to be around people who talk like that because it just...irks me! So I definitely know what you're coming at.

they are just words. just because some guy told everyone that they are swear words and they are "bad" that doesnt actually make it true. but i guess it could also depend on how you use these "swear" words. if you say "how the fuck are ya", i would not consider that offensive but if you said "your a fucking cunt", then some people might find that offensive.

I like swearing in casual company because it's fun. I think swearing in the workplace or classroom is completely inappropriate.

I think your expectations for how much other people swear is not normal, and I'm surprised that other people are agreeing with you.

I swear not because im a rebel just because its how i talk and how i was raised. Grew up around it my whole life.

Personally, I swear all the time, but it isn't to rebel, it's just a way of expressing myself.

I feel sorry for constant swearers because they most likely have a very poor vocabulary, (can't express their feelings without swearing) dismissive parents, poor educational opportunites, etc.

Me too! I don’t like people who swear or says bad words and I find it mean or offensive especially that I am a sensitive person, so I don’t hang out or make friends with people who do that often... I avoid listening to songs with bad words as well since it’s very uncomfortable and offensive as well. I don’t care what other people say - it’s just that I don’t like them and I will never say bad words or swear... You are not alone and don’t change! ;)

What people who claim that profanities/obscenities are "only words" fail to acknowledge is that even if those words were normalized and destigmatized, there would always be replacements for them. This is a normal function of language of human society. The words are placeholders for the taboos of a particular culture. In the U.S. swear words are largely based on sexual and scatological taboos, some religious. Swearing is offensive because it thrusts sensitive topics (in their most raw, irreverent, and disrespectful forms) into everyday speech for the mere purpose of emphasis. To people who attach meaning to words, it is not emphatic, but rather disruptive and rude.

That's completely normal! Most of my friends say so much bad words! But, I usually try to pretend I never hear those types of words! I actually don't like bad words either. To me, those types of words don't even make sense! I have never said a bad word in my life, and I never will!

I notice my bf does it a lot. More when he's talking to guys though. But when he recounts what was said at work, it's full of swear words, and I ask him if he actually says that. He claims he doesn't, but I'm not sure he can control it when he's talking to guys, even if it's superiors. He was raised in a rough neighborhood where he had to fight and be tough to survive, so I can't really blame him.

To me they're just words. However, in a formal convo you can't just say whatever, you know.

That Kate Nash is such a fucker. She sucked Morgan Freeman's 80 year old Wang. :)

When you swear all the time it loses all its true power, and you wind up just annoying people around you. It is much more shocking to hear it from someone who never swears than some dolt who's every other word is the f bomb.

I used to be just like you, but one day I found it was the only way to describe certain things. I don't swear all the time, because I don't want to come accross as foul-mouthed, however when I do swear people certainly take my seriously because they know I don't do it often. Which is how swearing should be used.

  • The propensity of most people to use crude references to sexual intercourse or defecation as a meaningless filler word mystifies me. Profanity is a symptom of low intelligence as far as I am concerned.

That's a very good character trait! I, for one, find that people who rarely curse are pretty easy to be around. Good for you.

I think swear words can be useful for emphasis, emotion, or adding a certain rhythm to your speech, and I always think it's a little immature when people start trying to censor other peoples' use of curses. However, I see nothing wrong if you yourself don't like to use them, and, yeah, some people do use them to be all anti-establishment, but frankly, people do a lot of otherwise valid things things simply to be anti-establishment, such as mocking politicians. It really depends on the context. If someone is swearing in a pretentious way, yeah, nothing wrong with thinking they're an idiot. If someone is swearing in a casual, conversational way, and not really trying to make anything of it, then I see no problem with it.

Cussing without reason is absolutely ridiculous. What do the words add? What's their purpose? If they are "just" words, why use them at all? There's no point.

Besides, with all the social stigma attached, they just "sound" ugly to me....

I try to avoid swearing whenever I can but I will cuss if I'm especially emotional.

On TV, it's fine when in moderation. But I hate people who swear in normal conversation for no reason at all.

i actually really like people who are intelligent, thoughtful, have a good working vocabulary, but who drop swear words in a select few instances as to raise their sentience and impact.

swearing all the time is very stupid!

  • I don't all the time, only when Im really worked up on something. I don't mind much when people swear. But I DO mind if the person is just saying it over and over and over...

I don't like swearing, but I just automatically do, without thinking about it.
Well, maybe I should correct myself, I'm kind of at a 50/50.
'Coz on one hand I think: "It's just words, how can it hurt anybody?"
And on the other hand I think: "If it's just words, and they hurt people, might aswell use something else". I just can't...

well st clair, that is not true because they swear on the radio (fuck, shit etc) and they say the same on tv. maybe because we are more laid back and care free so we dont see anything wrong with it. they are just words. when have words ever made a person? its the actions that truly makes a person.
