Is it normal that i dislike my nickname?

Okay, so when I was three I had a minor speech impediment. My real name is Jeremy. I pronounced it "Dinkany", and people started calling me that name. Later on it was shortened to either 'Dink' or 'Dinky'.

I'm SICK of that name. I was teased throughout elementary school and calld "Stinky Dinky", and everyone used to say I never showered. My parents never call me Jeremy except when i'm in trouble. So as a child I used to get into trouble a lot so I could hear my real name.

I keep telling everyone to stop, but nobody will listen. So can someone please tell me if this is normal? Are my family and friends being mean? Is Dinky a common nickname?

Just ignore people when they call you that. Don't turn around or anything for a while then say "oh I didn't know you were talking to me...my name is Jeremy."

It's normal to not like it. I also had a speech impediment when I was young( years of speech therapy lucky cured me) and I couldn't say my name so I used to say it funny too and got teased. I'm lucky though that I changed schools and no one knew the name or even that I'd had a speech problem

Tell them that you don't like it and you refuse to stand for being called that anymore.
Tell them your name if you have to and if they refuse to listen, then tell them to bugger off! Your parents should be ashamed of themselves! Instead of causing more pain, why didn't they take you to speech therapy?

I also have speech impediment, but it's random and only with certain words. The only trouble I have with my name is my middle. People always thought I was saying "wolf".
If I pronounce a word wrong, then people will laugh at me even friends have poked fun at me. I tend to try to avoid using those words. I've never seen a speech therapist, but they could definitely help and they wouldn't make fun of you.

    Good Luck:)

That's good, but they really should stop. If they cared about you then they would take you seriously and respect you. Give them a ultimatum if you must. Something to get your point across.

If you don't like it, that's normal. That isn't fair what they're doing. Tell them to stop and ignore them.

Of course it's normal. That's practically considered teasing.

Actually, I think it is considered teasing.

Just tell them your name is Jeremy over and over untilit annoys them. If this doesn't work, choke them. While choking them scream, "My name is Jeremy!" This is very effective. Warning they may press charges.

You should own it. And to be honest it doesn't sound that bad. I actually think it's fun to say. Also it could be worse, at least your nickname isn't asshole or bitch. haha

its not a common nickname. but it is original. y dont you just not respond to them when they call u that. if start ignoring them and only respond when they call u by your real name, then maybe they will stop. its worked for me on countless occaisions.

If you keep correcting them and sound serious about it then I think they'll start calling you Jeremy. At least it wasn't Tinky Tinkerbell.

I hate my nicknames too... they're not as bad, but they're still annoying...

That's why I come up with my own nicknames ;D I've got my entire church calling me Skittles ;D My boyfriend loves the story of how I got that nickname ;)

It's hard to get rid of a nickname once it's been established. The best thing to do is just not tell new people you meet about the name and once they've established calling you Jeremy, if they hear someone call you Dinky chances are they won't pick up on it unless they are doing it to be funny.
