Is it normal that i did something good but very selfish?

I did a very bad thing.

I just bought Seconds Out, a live album by Genesis. Not only the greatest Genesis live album and the ultimate Genesis experience, but also probably the greatest live album ever recorded in the history of music. I finally have it after years of searching. Also, it's the remastered version. I just heard the entire 95 minutes tonight. I am ecstatic.

But how can this be a bad thing, you ask? How can buying an incredible, virtually flawless album possibly be bad? I was MEANT to buy a CD for my best friend as a birthday gift! I was given £20 and the album cost £13.50, so I had little left to buy it.

So I bought I cheap 60s compilation instead with the remaining £6.50 called "24 No. 1s of the 60s", despite promising him I'd buy him Brave New World by Iron Maiden. Worse, that album was actually there in the shop, ready to buy for roughly the same price! I could have bought him the CD he wants so badly and even though I had the chance I selfishly bought an album which is 100x better, all for me.

I am so selfish! Is it normal? Has anybody else done this? He's gonna hate me for doing this, although then again he loves 60s music. Actually, I have the album I bought for him at home and it's pretty good. But it isn't what he's expecting. It's like promising to buy someone a gorilla suit and then giving them a plastic mask, or promising to take someone to see the pyramids of Egypt but taking them to see Morocco instead.

...is it normal anyone? I am so mean XD

"Has anybody else done this?" No, not that exactly.

But yeah, people do selfish things sometimes. I'll be honest. I've been guilty of being selfish at times. But a promise is a promise. Don't go against your word. Maybe you can return what you bought yourself, and get him what you promised him? I mean, that would be the right thing to do, wouldn't it?

Wait a minute. I just thought of something else. Tell him the ugly truth. Tell him that you know you promised him Brave New World, but your selfishness got in the way when you saw a live album by Genesis. Tell him that you feel horrible that you went against your promise. Apologize, and see what he says. Maybe you'll have a second chance, and you can go back when you save up the money again to buy him what he really wants. What you promised him.

Uhm, the party happened yesterday (but then again, the submission got accepted a day late, so it's not your fault). He opened the gift and was completely happy with the CD. He kind of forgot that he wanted Brave New World and just took the CD, read the back and saw all the artists, and thanked me.

I think I'm going to buy him BNW anyway though.

You placed your own wants and needs above that of someone else. Humans are primates and the very idea of primacy encourages this behaviour. You're normal.

I wouldn't personally break a promise like this, but I'm abnormal. Don't worry about it so much. You're the same as most people. And most people only care about being like other people so other people think they're normal too, so I think this is a win for you. This isn't intended to be sarcastic, by the way. I'm not being secretly mean.
