Is it normal that i cut?

Alright. Well, the habit started last year. For some reason, I became upset. I hated everything. I lost friends, I didn't gain any friends, I was rude, hateful, isolated, and sad. I had a counselor, but my mother still acts as if she owns me, and won't let me see her. Even if it's my decision. So, my habit is cutting. I cut when I'm upset. I like the scars. It reminds me of when I was a little girl, and I was abused by my father. It brings back that anger, and upsetting thoughts from being abused. I feel reconnected to that time. I also cut when I'm out of control, crying. When I cut the tears instantly stop, I relax, and that whimpering noise you make when you cry stops. Depending on how upset I am, the deeper I cut. I'm not worried if it's life threatening. My family doesn't know about it. Only a couple friends do. I use sharp scissors, knives, or pins to cut.
The point is, I want to know if it's normal if a person like me cuts. Thanks.

  • Cutting is never normal no matter what a person has been through but it goes a long way to explaining why a person would do such behaviour.

The best thing you can do is find an adult that will listen to you and tell them about your mother. Because if she is refusing to let you see your counselor, she is directly disrupting your road to recovery.

Secondly, cutting is a form of control, when we can't control what happens around us or feel like we have no control over our lives, by cutting we take back the situation and feel as though we can control something. It's the same principle with most self-destructive behaviours, taking back a measure of control.

But there are better ways to do such a thing and feel better. Going for a walk is one way to clear your head or writing down how you feel before tearing the paper up. You could even try writing poems or songs, so long as you are getting the feelings out.

I hope this could help a little and good luck.
