Is it normal that i could easily sleep 10 - 12 hours every night?

I'm in my mid-thirties, & I have slept alot my whole life. Even after sleeping 10-12 hours at night, I can still take a nap (weekends). I sometimes feel like I just can't get enough rest. I don't have any health problems that could be contributing to this. My family & friends pick on me for sleeping so much, but I can't help it. Is it normal to be able to sleep this much.

  • You're normal. I learned about it in one of my university classes. The shitty thing is, people who are NOT like that will criticize you for it even though it's perfectly natural.

I'm 36 and I can't function properly without a minimum 8 hour sleep (have been like this since I was a child), but I prefer 10-11 hours a day.

@thisissomuchfun...Thank you so much. You're right, people who don't understand can make you feel like you're just lazy. Good to know someone understands!

when you over or undersleep you are tired, try to create a routine so your body knows its time to go to bed and try to set a stable bedtime and set an alarm for 9:30

Well..I am in my thirties too, I have two kids, I am married, I always worked, I do some exercise or walk in a park for 30 minutes a day, have a healthy enough diet, don't smoke or drink.
As long as I remember myself I always needed 10 to 11 hours sleep.
Overweight? yes i am about 10 kg overweight, but only now for about a year.
Habbit? I tried to change it. Last year for about a month long I forced myself out of bed at 6 am, which was exactly after 8 hours sleep, and went for a run for 15 minutes, did my stretching, took the shower and crawld back in bed, nothing changed even in months time, despite the theory of human ability to adjust to new habits in 2 to 3 days.
Thankfuly my friends and family do not laugh @ me or make stupid comments. I can't help it, I can't get out of bed. I dream a lot every night and I love sleeping.
Sometimes it upsets me 'cos I feel I miss out on lot of things in life, but the same time I am not sure what do I miss out on if I miss anything...

  • I used to be like that during summer when school was over. Now I got the habit of waking up at 5 am and it just broke my sleep habit. I miss sleeping that much :(

@wigsplitz - Wow, you must be a miserable person to be so harsh. If you can't relate, I understand, but you don't have to be so rude & insensitive.

Much jealousy. You sleep more in two nights than I often do in a week. I'd love to once just feel tired and go to bed and sleep until morning.

  • It's normal for you. If you don't have any health problems that could cause it, it's okay.

If I could I would sleep that much too, unfortunately work gets in the way of that, on a weekend I'll sleep atleast 12 hours. But I think depression has to do with it, do you suffer from that?

Do more stuff! You can't be doing much if you're sleeping that much. Do you have a job?? Go to school?? Exercise or something. Exercise energizes you. Get up off your ass. You can't sleep if you're not lying around.

@wigsplitz...Yes, I do have a full-time job and a fairly active social life. By you making the comment "Get off your ass" just goes to show how people like you just do not understand.

Well if you're sleeping, that means you're laying on your ass, doesn't it? What do you mean you can't help it....simple solution, don't lie down so much! Get the fuck up. Do something.
