Is it normal that i can't think of any object i couldn't live without?

Recently I was asked what three things I couldn't live without besides the necessities(food, water, shelter). I was stuck. I couldn't think of one object I would need. Is that normal?

Could you live without a ceramic turtle?

Simple. A knife, a backpack and a canteen. Lighter and lighter fluid would be good too.

Even most running water is unsafe to drink; a knife is good for catching your food, opening your food, skinning/filleting your food and protection among other things and do you know how difficult it is to make fire without a lighter or matches? A backpack is the least necessary object, but it would be very useful if you found an abundance of food to gather and were on the go. I don't think anybody could do without these things for long, unless they had a house with stored items or something.

  • A single object you "THINK" you would need.

You would be quite a mess if you were ever actually in that situation. Everyone thinks they'd be good in "this or that" situation and then power sharts themselves when it happens.

I don't think I'd b good. I think it would b a challenge for sure. But I also feel like it's teaching society a lesson

You were asked 'what three things...', but thing' and 'object' aren't perfectly interchangeable. For example, love, friendship, entertainment, creativity and intelligence are all 'things', none of which are objects.

I can think of three things I couldn't live without apart from the essentials.

I can't think of three objects I couldn't live without. If most of us were honest, I expect we could ALL live without the objects we own RIGHT now, if our basic needs were still provided. However, we would inevitable acquire and create new objects. That's in our nature. So yes, it's normal you couldn't think of any objects.

Well we also had to list three qualities, three hobbies, and three people. Those were so easy. So would u really say that is normal then? For me to even want to experience life without it all?

You've posted a lot of stories in a short time, huh?!

I'd say it's normal you can't think of any objects you couldn't live without.

I'd also say it's normal you have a desire to relieve yourself of material wealth which you perceive as a potential burden. Many people romanticise a simpler existence - one without consumerism, the industrialisation and urbanisation of society. One without all this shiny metal and plastic, electrically charged 'stuff'.

Realistically, if you wanted to try life with ONLY the bare minimum mentioned (food, water, shelter) this is what you'd have to live with:

No clothes, No TV, no phone, no computer, no internet, no furniture (chairs, tables, sofas etc.), no mode of transport (car, bike etc.), no books, no cups, no plates, no cutlery (spoons, knives or forks), no oven, no fridge, no carpet, no curtains, no bed sheets, no paper, no pens, no bags or storage containers, no CD player, no CDs, no radio, no lightbulbs, no lights, no locks, no keys, no doors, no wallet, no debit/credit card, no bin (trash can), no toilet, no toilet paper, no soap, no makeup, no toothbrush, no toothpaste, no mirror, no sink, no towel.

Obviously the easiest way to experience this would be to camp in the wild for several months. You couldn't bring any of the things i've mentioned in that list. You couldn't use anything owned by anyone else. It would literally be you, a tent, a nearby freshwater stream, and food you've either brought with you, or food you can hunt / forage for.

Try it if you think you'll learn something from it (and not die in the process).

P.S. watch the film Into The Wild, I think you'll appreciate the sentiment.

I have actually. I've also read it. I actually do admire him. I wish I had as much bravery to me.
Well yes, it would b hard at first, but I've always loved creating and searching for my own. I'm quite independent.

I would also suggest watching the show Out of the Wild. It gives you a very realistic picture of what survival can do to us normal folk. It's quite draining really and you can see the cast wasting away as they struggle to find food.

Bear Grylls has so much survival knowledge, but he also makes everything look so easy.

Man, Woman Wild is like an in-between and they do get beat down by their environment sometimes.

On a side note, Alaska has got to be one of the worse places to practice your survival skills. I don't think I would ever dare try.

I read that book and came away thinking the kid was asking for trouble, being so incredibly unprepared for survival.

Woahhhhh not prepared haha. Ill start small. Perhaps traveling for a week or so with a friend....then slowly build it up. He went out there completely unprepared...

  • There's a big difference between want and need. Anyone can live without their electronics, car or even their clothes. The only thing we need to live is food, water, and in some cases medicine (if youre someone who will die without it.)

That is true. It's just weird for a young girl to feel as though I could live without all my things. Most girls my age are all about shopping and wasting their money on stuff. I save all my money for if I need it. Everything for me is a question of need.

Well I can easily think of 3 things that I couldn't live without and coincidentally could also live for the rest of my life on and island with. Internet, laptop, and a power source.

You can just gather/make food, water, and shelter, so you are thinking in the completely wrong direction, which is why you are stuck.

You seem so normal to me. What you are saying is "my only essentials are the things that are essential".

It's the people who don't think that way who are odd. Or rather than odd, they've been deceived into a false value of other things by corporations who exist only to sell them those things and so have to practice deceit in order to be successful.

That's what I though. Or was hoping. Of course I was the only one with nothing written down while everyone else had their phone, computer, Xbox. Why do I live in a world of idiots....I have to ask sometimes. I just don't understand why!!!! Yes, you might get bored without them. But I'm perfectly fine to go take a stick, and draw in sand! I think I came a few generations late....

I think I'd go through serious withdrawal without music, and I need objects to listen to that. I'd get bored to the bone without anything to do, and objects are important for doing basically anything. People have been carving objects for as long as we know there have been people and not all of those objects have been basic necessities, so perhaps objects *are* a basic necessity in that we need them to satiate our crippling boredom and prevent ourselves from going mad. By that logic, perhaps there's no single object (aside from headphones, an MP3 player and a charger) that I couldn't live without, but at the same time losing all my objects at once would be too difficult for me.

That's not to say I don't think a lot of people would be surprised by what they could do without, because I think they would. So I think you're normal.

So you'd be happy to see your life being reduced to biological functions? Eat, shit, sleep. Interesting. I feel amputated of a limb if my smartphone isn't with me.

Well it would drive me crazy eventually. But I think it would b such an eye opening experience. You would get to see what life really has to offer, away from all the man made processed things. That idea really excites me.
