Is it normal that i can't stand in front of the microwave?

Microwave frequencies are entirely safe. They are non-ionising radiation, meaning that they lack the ability to change the structure of your cells or damage the telomeres (the chromosomal cap of cells which protect them from mutations that lead to cancers).

The way they heat food, although it may seem unlikely, is by vibration because the're at just the right (resonant) frequency to shake up water and fats. It's the same principle that a musical note may cause a glass to vibrate (or even shatter).

If you're still concerned then, microwave radiation like most radiation observes the inverse square law. If you're twice as far from the emitter, you receieve four (2*2) times less dose. Three times further away, you get a ninth. However, microwave ovens are designed to be efficient and the best way of being efficient is keeping the microwaves inside the over until they have done their job. The chance of you receiving any dose whatsoever is pretty low.

If you want a cancer scare, there are plenty more innocuous things that should concern you. Air fresheners, things made of plastic, shampoo, and spray-on deodorant, for instance.

Don't worry, you'll die of lung cancer soon and won't have to worry about the microwave anymore.

I have an acquaintance who ALWAYS stands in front of his microwave when it's on. He's a practicing catholic and keeps praying to his gawd that the microwaves will make him infertile. He has seven kids and one on the way.
