I can't sleep and its been over a year since I got proper amounts of sleep. Is it normal?

I would see a doctor about this and it's possible that you might need to have a sleep study done.
Other alternatives are as follows- Kava is a natural remedy that promotes relaxation and helps insomnia, Valerian root also has similar effect.
Food is a natural sedative. Eat plenty of carbohydrates and after you will crash hard right to sleep. If you can't process them right try ice cream. Fix the cycle with exercise it builds specific chemicals required to properly discharge the body at the end of the day. The problem I have found is often you need sleep first though before you can exercise. Catch-22 situation.
If you are still not sleeping see a medical professional. Don't resort to drugs unless advised. Even the over the counter junk can mess with your head.

Melatonin pills can help. 3-6 mg all at once or can order a controlled release type. Benadryl might also put you to sleep, but doesn't work for me.
No. I say this from experience. Sometimes it fixes itself on its own while other times, it doesn't. Since it has been going on for so long, I really think that you should consult a doctor or even try some natural remedies, if you haven't already. Valerian Root is good, but the smell and taste can be pungent. Kava Kava causes relaxation and is often used to help with insomnia. However, there has been placed a serious concern that it can cause liver damage.

yes I agree that you should tell someone, a psychologist for example. I remember when I was a little kid I was in the same situation as yours and my father told to go to a psychologist and I actually got through it.
Nope. You should go see someone about that - preferably a holistic Dr as they seem to be more educated on sleep than a normal Dr and get to the root of it /eliminate it. Been there, done that, not fun.
