Is it normal that i can't remember if something was real or a dream?

Sometimes I'll vaguely recall something that I did, or snippets of conversation I had with someone and just won't be able to remember whether it actually happened in real life or if it was just a dream that I had.

This happens to my wife. It's funny when she is pissed at me because of a dream she had.

I'm experiencing this now. I can't remember if some guy and a kid came to my front door and were trying to look in the windows or if it was a dream. I suspect the problem of not being able to remember if it was real is not being fully present in each moment throughout the day. I've been being pulled in all different directions at once at work and having to multitask like crazy. If it was real, I had a million other more important things going through my mind at the time and so I think I failed to commit to memory any other facts that would help me validate this as a legit memory such as "what day was this?", "what was I doing just before and after?" If it happened, I gave it a the minimal amount of thought required, and then continued whatever I was thinking about without ever fully breaking away from it in the first place...kind of how a dream works - you switch between unrelated scenes suddenly with no ties to what happened before or after.

I think I know what you're talking about. Sometimes I question myself if the events really happened or did I obscure the reality of it. So frustrating!

I had that before. I still can't figure out if it was a dream or not:
I was little and was trying to cut an orange,
And i cut my finger and it was hanging by a thread. My aunt wrapped it in a white long bandage and gave me a bag of sour gummy worms and let me watch Ren & Stimpy on T.V.

When I was little I dreamed I could fly. I told my mom in the car and she wanted me to prove it, I was so disappointed I couldn't fly.

I get that kind of deja vu all the time.

  • This happens to me too. It bothers me very much. This happens a lot to me, though.

These are lucid dreams, and can seem real, but not being able to tell them from reality isn't normal. Could be borderline schizophrenia.

Some dreams appear to be so realistic that this is possible.

That happens to me sometimes too. I don't like it when it happens. It's much worse when you wake up from a dream thinking for a bit that it's real. Argh, I hate it when that happens. Although, that usually only happens when I dream about having money.:S A lot of dreams are too strange to actually happen, but for the ones that aren't, then I guess it's understandable to get muddled up.
