Is it normal that i can't overcome my fear of darkness?

Is it normal that I can't over come my fear of darkness? There's just something about the dark that makes me uncomfortable, but I dot know what. Could it be dreams I have or things that have happened to me in real life that encounter me in the dark coming from my mind? Is it normal that I am afraid of the dark? And also is it possible to be able to get rid of my phobia to darkness without consouling? Because I think i'm getting too old and also it's getting out of hand to the point where I can't sleep and I just stare into the dark for an hour. Please tell me if this is normal and if you guys/girls had the same problem and had gotten rid of it.

If you cannot sleep then it is not normal.

Anything that is preventing you from sleeping is not normal.

If you are too afraid to see a psychologist, then you can try darkness meditation.

It's simple, go into a dark room with a flashlight or lamp and a timer. Set the timer for 60 seconds turn off the lights, sit down crossed legged on the floor and think about nothing. After the timer rings, turn on the light.

Do that until 60 seconds is no longer scary then do 120 seconds of darkness meditation. Keep on increasing the time until you are no longer afraid.

This will take an extremely long time but that's normal, don't rush.

I have tried as much as I can remember. Sometimes I can control it, others its just a kind of torture. Its hard for me to sleep alone for the same reason. Ofcourse, I prefer sleeping alone but the fear is just too much to bear. Think about something completely unrelated to your fears. For eg. bunnies, music, a comedy movie, a scene from some random episode, even God, if it helps.. Whatever it is, it should be strong enough to calm your fears. I use music and talk to a friend at night.

Yes, it's normal but if you start to feel like your phobia is taking over your life I would seek help to get over it. It's hard feeling like something is controlling how you live your life
