If you just mean normal numbers and not necessarily dates, I teach the kids to count in three digits from the right and put in a comma. This is just like a punctuation mark where you stop and say 'thousand' or if another three digits it's 'million'.
So, 12345 is 12, 345
That's 12 thousand, three hundred and forty five.
For 1234567 it's 1, 234, 567
One million, 234 thousand, 567
Hope this is what you mean, and that it helps.
I never learned how to read roman numerals. Guess we skipped that chapter in grade school haha!
I sometimes struggle in French. It's okay now the year is past 2000, but saying something like 1783, I always have to pause to work it out. Maybe we just need practice.
If you are over 12 then it should concern you. You will be laughed at in the business world.
