I can't offer anything to help, but I can say you're not alone. Sleep and I are not well-acquainted and never have been. I'm pretty sure I won't find a solution to it now, but I hope that you do.

Here's what you need to do:
    1. Go to your doctor and get on antidepressants, just for six months or so. Give them a month to work. Don't stop taking them after a few days if they make things worse. Talk to your doctor. You may need to try a couple of different ones. Be patient with them. It will pay off in dividends.
    2. Take up yoga. It sucks at first and hurts like hell but keep at it. At the very least, do some vigorous exercise every day.
    3. Have a TV in your room so at least you can provide your mind with some passive diversion if you still can't sleep. This is because you may be too exhausted to read even though you still can't sleep.
    4. Take a non-addictive drug with hypnotic properties (hypnotic means "sleep-inducing", not hypnotising, so don't worry; it's just medical terminology). Doxepin is great - it knocks you right out. Promethazine and Doxylamine are antihistamines that will also knock you out. DO NOT TAKE any benzodiazepines (valium, sleeping pills , etc) because you will get hooked and it will ruin your life. Also, I do not recommend taking Ambien (trade name of Zopiclone) or Stillnox (Zolpiden) because too many people have bad reactions.
    5. Stop drinking coffee if you do.
    6. If you smoke, stop a few hours before bed.
    7. Find a good psychologist you can talk to - not just the first one that comes up on yellow pages. Ask around online for a referral.
    8. Don't drink alcohol.
    9. Some people recommend smoking marijuana to help you sleep and it really works for some people. I don't personally think it's a good idea but it wouldn't be fair for me to NOT tell you something that works for other people. If you do use pot, use a vapouriser so you don't get lung cancer. They are cheap on eBay.

I have insomnia really bad, and the best natural way is to wear yourself out. When I had a job that was physically demanding I slept much better.

You could try going to the gym or doing some kind of physical activity in the evening to tire you out a little.

  • I clean when I can't sleep. Sometimes it lasts for a few hours, but I feel a strange sense of satisfaction/peace and it gets my mind off of whatever it was that was troubling me in the first place. By the time I'm finished, I'm pooped and sleep comes easily.

Depression is serious though, so you should see your doctor or a psychologist to help you through this troubling time.

Make sure you have good sleep-hygiene and be leery of drugs to help you sleep (they sometimes cause more problems than they're worth).

Smile when you wake up and keep yourself busy with productive activities. Me, I stalk the mailman until I find out where he lives then fill his mail box with useless shit.
