Is it normal that i can't draw people very well?

I love drawing, but my people aren't the best. They look like people, but I know people who can draw way better people. My arms are always different lengths, I can't draw hands, I can't draw faces, and I have trouble drawing many poses. Am I the only one who has trouble drawing people?

people is one of the hardest subject to draw/paint. because if u mess up even the slightest detail it won't look right. unlike it would with a still life or a landscape. trust me, i couldn't draw people at all, but was really good at drawing/painting landscapes. just take couple of figure drawing classes and you should be fine :)

  • It is completely normal. I have the same troubles. I can draw pretty much anything except people. It is hard to get the proportions right and its also hard to make the face of the person look real. I've been drawing for about four years now and my people have only gotten slightly better. My suggestion would be to buy a book that helps you draw people step by step instead of just free handing it all. It'll help you get the proportions more correct.

All you need to do is practise.Hands and the face are the most difficult to draw when it comes to the human body-if when doing a portrait you move the nose for example half a mm it's a whole different person. It's hard because the smallest mistakes are very visible.
When it comes to various poses you need to study the human anatomy, the bones the muscles etc. to really know what makes it look that way when bent or whatever...
If you find it to difficult, try still life drawing because it's an easier way to learn about proportions and perspectives.Once you've grasped that you can try drawing people.Just remember-when drawing everything you need to know is right there in front of you!Good luck!

Have you tried lifedrawing? I used to love lifedrawing and after a while I got pretty good at it. It really gives you an eye for proportions and how the human body fits together.

of course its normal. i think you just need to practice more. get some books from the library and draw the examples in there and just keep trying. you'll get the hang of it.

I've been in art school and been drawing my whole life and my figure drawing still leaves something to be desired. They offer free classes to the public at my school. Check ur area. And use ur finger or pencil when ur gauging the lengths of body parts. And work off of a real model or picture, not just from memory. It makes it a lot harder to fill in blanks from memory, especially when ur focusing on proportions.

Try practicing certain parts at a time. For example, you can focus on drawing lots of hands, look closely at your own and other people's hands, study the bone structure of hands, and draw hands making many different gestures and from different angles. I too have difficulty with hands, though not with the rest of people's body, just hands. The hardest part is being able to draw many different poses from your head that look good. I can draw anyone from a front profile view, but drawing them laying down, or with their legs crossed, or with their arms waving around is difficult. Remember to try drawing people from the back too, because before you know it you might have the front down but will be lacking in the back area.

  • I have this problem to, most of time I draw monsters and animals. When I try to draw a human it ends up with having sharp claws and teeth.

    (sorry for my crappy English)

  • well, I've taken art in school where they taught us how to draw people, though only in terms of proportions. You're probably right. I just need someone to help me.

well, if you are just drawing naturally, without any classes or books, more than likely you just need a little help. check out the library or google help with drawing. there are probably some simple tricks that you don't realize.

I know a lot of people who couldn't draw if their life depended on it! Doesn't matter the subject, they just can't draw. I, on the other hand, have been drawing since I was a kid, and people say I'm pretty good :)
