Is it normal that i bite the skin around my fingernails?

When I get nervous, instead of biting my nails, I bite the skin around them. Sometimes to the point where I bleed. My fingers look horrible, and I'm afraid to go around my family, my friends, even complete strangers. Is this normal?

I ues to do this when I was a kid, but never when it starts to bleed. My fingers start looking weird so I stopped. I think it's pretty normal.

I used to bite my fingernails and the skin, but under some strang circumstances, I managed to kick the habit. Quiting cold turkey may be a solution you want to try out, but it you don't think you can do it, go with some of the above mentioned actions. And yes, it is pretty normal.

I do this too. Usually, it happens because I'm really stressed out or nervous.

  • Use cuticle trimmers and emery boards to make it smooth so you won't bite them. Oh, and wear heavily scented hand lotion as a deterrent.

Thanks so much. I tried the lotion and it's helping. I really appreciate the advice and knowing I'm not alone (:
