Is it normal that i believe my parents should be divorced?

I don't know WHY this revelation struck me the first summer away from home, but I'm convinced that my parents ought to be divorced.

They hug me and they show ME affection, but otherwise it's like there's two parallel worlds compacted into one house.

My dad: Swears to God he's perfect. Has ED. Shuts himself up in the garage half of the day when not at work. (Salesman) Rabid perfectionist to point of yanking things out of your hands if "You don't do it right." Rants about my mom to me whenever we're alone, but shows affection towards the both of us. Considers my field of interest (Psychology/Sociology) "total bullshit, but hey, you don't have to please me, please yourself."

My mom: At one point mentally disturbed to the point of physically attacking me when I brought home large assignments in 4th grade, better now. Rants about my father to me in private. Only mild, friendly affection towards my dad but loves me. Much more supportive of my choices in life. Tries to get me on her side.

So am I onto something or what?

By ED do you mean erectile dysfunction or eating disorder?

  • I don't know if it's normal, but I wanted my parents to get divorced from a young age.

I never could understand children who made a giant fuss, wanted their parents to stay together, and acted like it was the worst thing that ever happened to them. Maybe those are the kids whose parents completely hid their hatred and so it came as a shock... I'd say it's normal to sense that your parents are unhappy together. When two people you at least sort of love are unhappy, you'd want them to move on, wouldn't you?

More directly, I've read it's common for couples to feel completely separate and live in two different worlds. Maybe it's more pronounced now because they've just been waiting for you to move out?

    • It's been this way since I was 10 and the personalities have been there since I was born. What I have noticed since coming back from college is that they no longer work together on anything and do not speak to each other except to bellyache about the world, etc.

Your parents are not a science (or 'Psychology') experiment!
Maybe they should divorce you? They don't sound like a freak!

    • Fuck off. I'm trying to remain as objective as possible to make sure that it isn't just my imagination making shit up.

You're noticing it more now because you are out of that environment.
