Is it normal that i awake at 4 am and play the music i was dreaming?

Sometimes I awake in the middle of the night when I've been dreaming of a full orchestra playing a new song. Since I know the drill, I just rise up half asleep and stagger into the dining room to the piano like some drunk in an alley.

At the piano with my ear phones mounted on my head, I begin to pick out the notes, sometimes one by one. Gradually putting it all together and working out the harmonics, or creating a good bridge for the middle of the song, I start playing it like Beethoven or possibly Bozo, the Clown or a naked pervert playing in the moonlight, I'm not sure which, but it must look pretty weird.

I don't know if I'm some genius or just crazier than a loon. The strange thing is that some of the songs are pretty good if I do say so myself. The trouble is that as soon as I put the song together, I've accomplished what I wanted and I go on to the next song instead of trying to get it recorded and published.

is it normal to dream of music in the middle of the night and get up out of bed to finish it and play it or am I just a crazy musician, or possibly a werewolf responding to a full moon unwittingly?

    I get the same thing! It's easier for me to use FL Studio and my noise-cancelling headphones for it, though, because the people in my house might hear me playing the piano.. even though I love playing piano. Argh. ><

      I have a good electric piano with earphones. I've gotten so I can't stand an out of tune piano and it's too much of a hassle to keep them tuned up with weather changes, etc. Some of my harmonies are wild enough already.

    The government is stealing your ideas. They sense talent in the unestablished middle and lower class and steal it in the night. It is then given to the idyllic slaves of our society, flaunted, sold and worn out. Don't be surprised when you hear Lady Gaga singing to your symphonies on the radio.

      Everybody watches you O/L and take what they want. The U.S. government, maybe Iran, US companies, O/L pervs. I give up. I just let it all hang out so now I don't have to worry about hiding anything.

      I like Lady GaGa's music. Maybe she'd let me come up to her room afterwards and make some real music.
