Is it normal that i am very fit but unable to do sit ups?

Hi all,

i am female, 57kg, 170cm. Am generally very fit. No problem with pull ups, running etc.
BUT I AM UNABLE TO DO A SINGLE SIT UP?! I cant do crunches either.

The thing is i can lift my legs up and down for abs training but i just cant do sit ups. My friend told me it's because my posture is too straight, that i am not curling when i do sit ups. But i am unable to change my posture since i have been like that since young. Is it also due to my long torso?

What else can i do? I have an exercise test coming up in 3 weeks and really want to ace it!

It doesn't sound like you have much core strength. Try pilates or yoga to strengthen it.

  • Sit ups and crunches can do more damage than good.

They push the abdominal wall OUT. Good abs are already there, the way to get them is to not eat too much junk so there is no fat covering them.

Urg...what a joke. "good abs are already there?" Yes...your abs are hidden beneath a layer of fat, but if you have no core strength then you need to do some sort of strength training to make them strong. Wow.

I bet you're a trainer too. Too bad.

Sit ups and crunches put strain on the back, and they don't do much of the waist. I would suggest butterfly kicks. They're like bicycle kicks, but harder. I do them 2 inches off the floor D: It pulls in the stomach, a problem that most women have.

  • You need to do some exercises that will strengthen your back muscles. You can do shoulder shrugs to tighten your traps which may help greatly with your posture. Also having a strong back makes doing crunches and sit ups a lot easier and will help you keep good form throughout your ab workouts.

If you have overall fitness and do overall exercises I am surprised you can't.
I used to be able to do sit-ups all night long, but not many push-ups, so I just started to do push-ups in batches of 10, and gradually built it up to 100 per night.

    You could try something similar?
