Is it normal that i am shy around people at school?

I have gone to an all girl's school for 2 years. I have a small group of my best friends (3 best friends plus me) and some friends that I talk to in the hall and during class. There is a huge group of girls who have gone to school together since kindergarten that I am kind of intimidated by because there are so many, but I will talk to them one on one. Aside from that I am pretty shy. My school held an art show a week ago with all the students work and my parents came with me. The only other people there were the big group of girls. Instead of following them around I just looked at the art with my parents fro the ten minutes we were there. When we left my mum got mad at me for not talking to the other girls. Is it normal that I didn't talk to the girls?

Being shy is common, I'm rather shy myself. I was actually intimidated by the members of out schools anime club because they all knew each other since elementary school. I think that you're mom just wants you to be a social butterfly. However, I don't blame you for being intimidated.

I've been shy my entire life. I was never the girl who made friends. Just waited for people to come to me, and if I didn't want to talk to them, I didn't. It's completely normal. I'm turning 19 this year, and still haven't grown out of it.

There's nothing wrong with being shy, your mother should give you a break. I'm shy wherever I go and it often takes me a long time to adjust. My family has criticised me for not talking to my peers, but it just can't be helped. I'm sure you'll eventually be comfortable around them, if not then maybe you can get to know someone outside of class.
