Is it normal that i am comfortable being depressed?

Is it normal that I am actually more comfortable being depressed compared to being happy or in a good mood? I find that when I'm depressed (and when I say depressed I mean I suffer from fairly severe depression), I don't care about things anymore. One of my phsyciatrists told me that it's most likely because overall, I have been depressed longer than I have been truly happy so depression has become my norm, and thats what I'm comfortable with. I somewhat agree. What do you guys think?

Changes are always shocking, even if are good ones. When you hit the bottom and stay there for a while, you actually get quite used to the feeling.

I also went through this. I had depression for many years and one of the hardest parts was to actually feel comfortable about being happy again. I remember that every time I got into a good mood it felt unsettling in some way. It is kind of a fear that it would not last anyway.

Yes, depression can be addicting almost. Like your psychiatrist said it becomes your norm. But that means it's unhealthy so you still need to continue to get help.

When you become comfortable being depressed is actually an alarm bell that it's really bad.

I think it's normal...From what you're saying, depression has become a part of who you are. If you would've been happy most of your life you would probably feel differently about this.

Yes. Clinical Depression literally is part of my personality, I don't even know any other way anymore it's so hard to get out of.

Sounds like me.. I am depressed most of the time but I don't mean to be. But it seems like I've been depressed for so long that I'm actually adjusting to it.

I guess after awhile someone can become numb to their own feelings, and any shift from the norm is uncomfortable.

This sounds normal to me because your impression of normal has changed.

Hmm I kind of know what you mean. Years ago I was prescribed to anti depressants which just made me feel numb, emotionless.
I stopped taking them. I prefer to feel something, even if it is sadness, instead of nothing. I do not feel alive when I am emotionless and apathetic.

I take anti depressants and they help me a lot with anxiety.

I hate being depressed too but does it feel weird for you when you are in a good mood?

Not really, to be honest I think I may be a manic depressive ( bipolar) because when I'm happy I'm really happy and loud but then at night or in the evenings I get really down.
Occasionally though when I'm happy I just get this feeling that something will go wrong but to be honest I can't remember the last time I was a happy, I have moments and days where I'm not down or am happy but in terms of actually being happy with life and my place in it, it must be about 3 years since I've truly felt happiness
