Is it normal that i am ashamed of being american?

I'm a teenage girl, and it's my dream to travel the world on someday. I want to visit all the different, rich cultures the world has to offer. The only thing is, is that I'm American, and being American in certain countries can be one of the biggest stigmas ever. All I ever hear about is how Americans are fat and greedy, which is certainly not true. It's like saying all Germans want Jewish people to burn or that all middle-eastern (not sure if I'm politically correct here, btw) want to bomb us. While I think it is ignorant, I'm very sensitive, and I couldn't travel anywhere I felt unwelcome. I'm almost scared to travel because people would already have pre-characterized me as a typical 'American'. Is this normal? Is there anyone else out there like this?

It depends! They dont hate all americans, only the US citizens. Now I will tell you a fucking big news: there are plenty other americans outside of the us.

Pretend that you are a mexican, canadian, brazilian, bolivian etc and you will have no issues.

i'm english the americans i've encountered whilst traveling deserve the rep you guys have - someone literally had the cheek to ask me to talk *slowly and clearly* if i wasn't fluent in english and that they spoke a lil bit of french if that would help...

but still you're you - america is just where you're from - so no one reallllllly has the right to judge

I feel the same way sometimes, as an American I may not like the reputation and heavy weight we carry with certain countries in the world, so it's okay to feel this. But this is also an exciting part of your life as you prepare to explore the many foods, dance the many music, and experience the many differnet cultures. I have traveled throughout the world and have noticed one thing all the peoples have in common, that no matter the culture, the country, or religion, that we are all the same, a want to be happy and thankful for all the we have. When you pack and venture out, remember that no matter what country your from, American or not, you tell them your name and leave your mark, they will remember you :-)

  • I don't think anyone is more prejudiced against Americans than Americans... and perhaps the French.

How long has your family lived here? American is so fake... You are whatever your heritage is. American is not actually a race so it means what ever you make it. I was born here... But seriously American blood??? There is no such thing that is so insulting...

I count Americans amongst my friends and have many as acquaintances. Admittedly they are a special breed of American in that they decided to travel and live abroad but I know American Americans too. The biggest problem with any nationality is the national identity, not the individual. There are good and bad in every culture. If you travel, be open, engage people, and just be yourself, you and the people you meet will realise how alike we all are, regardless of what country we live in.

well then you should prove them otherwise, before you go to these countries read up on their cultures, study their language, things like that, and you won't be furthering the stereotypes about americans like many tourists do... then they prolly wont even notice where you're from, and if they do have any problem just tell them that not every american is bad even if the media says so, and it's wrong for them to believe that

Sadly, you are correct about the stigma. I am a big traveller and have been all over the world (Europe, Asia, Russia, Australia and south Africa so far) and have been mistaken for an American everywhere I've gone...and truthfully, people have ignored me and been very rude to me until they find out I'm in fact Canadian. Once they learned that, attitudes have completely changed and frequently I've heard rants about Americans as a result. And I've had this happen in every country I've visited. It's not right and it IS ignorant....but it does happen.

Don't let it stop you from traveling though. Not everyone is like this. You'll meet a lot of fabulous people and you won't even remember the ignorant ones.

OK, listen America is full of Idiots and fat poeple and stupid ignoront racist retards however every country has its flaws and im sure thier is alot of poeple that are hated in other parts of the world for other things . However some of our tourists may be complete idiots that make us look bad, but just be a good example for us and be a good one , please for Americas sake look good over sea . Also every country will rant about how every other country sucks any how so dont fret . infact I went on a rammestien video comment section to see german insualt england , as russia insults everyone , and poland insulted france as france insulted america as america insualted everyone who insualted them so it doesnt matter just dont be a little jerk when you visit other countrys becuase its very rude and I know decent Americans proboly hate foreigners coming here and acting like we are worthless when they are in our country .

  • I lived in japan until I was about 7 and I remember being called a "half" or "disgrace" because my father is American and my mother is Japanese. A few older more biased people called me this. It would always hurt but we would ignore it. That's the problem with stereotypes; they never benefit anyone. It's true though, there are a small amount of people that are stereotypical in all countries. You shouldn't be afraid to let them judge you. I go through it everyday.

Just don't act like the "ugly American". I know when I traveled no one ever assumed I was American and I took it as a compliment. I was then proud to be an American doing my part to change the stereotype, if even it was only one person at a time.

      "Un-American bastards"?
Here we have an American who thinks the American soldiers who are on non-american soil fight for American freedom.
They feel ashamed because americans have a bad reputation around the world, which is pretty bad, considering the country is barely 240 years old, which is very young compared to the old world.
What america needs is to withdraw all troops from other countries, and maybe then you will get more respect.
