I had a friend who got a credit card based on a false representation of her income. She then "couldn't leave the mall" without spending "at least $450." She would ask to hide purchases at my apartment so her boyfriend wouldn't know how much money she was spending on crap. I pointed out at the time how somehow she was able to "survive" prior to the acquisition of that credit card. I don't think she ever paid it off.

If you've ever had to support yourself, or yourself and others as well, or been somewhat poor, or homeless, if you've ever slept in your car for months because that's where you lived, if you've ever known what it was like to see an aluminum can or a glass bottle on the road and have a strong urge to pick it up that you had to fight because you don't have to depend on that kind of thing anymore, or begging for money from strangers so you can have $1.00 to get SOMETHING to eat on the dollar menu at a fast food place, if you've ever been ecstatically happy to find a packet of the free wrapped crackers they give you for free with to-go soup, and savored them like they were candy or a steak dinner because you are literally starving, if you've ever wandered into Starbucks and taken some of the Sugar in the Raw packets because you wanted to eat something and you had nothing, then you would probably be able to resist that urge to shop.

There is shopping and there is spending. Sorry to be a nag and split hairs but if you are just "window shopping" then it sounds like a great coping mechanism. If you are hoarding and or burying yourself in debt by spending too much then it ain't normal darling. Being broke makes most people a bit irritated, sad or depressed especially when they get up and bust their chops at work every day only to have the paycheck vaporize to pay the bills and crap.

From what you describe, that is an addiction. It may not totally feel like one. But often it doesn't.

Sometimes if I'm in a bad mood I feel like I need to buy something to feel better but it's not really a good thing to not have self control especially if you can't afford it and buy it anyway
