Is it normal that i almost only have nightmares?

I remember a lot of my dreams when I wake up (which is a lot), and most of them are nightmares. While I can't recall anything particularly disturbing happening when I was 6 years old, I do remember watching an old black and white vampire movie. I might've been scared, and I remember having multiple nightmares as a result of that one movie. (Now though, I don't dream about vampires anymore).

The movie was mediocre, and I don't think I was mentally scarred, however I have many different recurring nightmares; and over the years, some of those repeated nightmares evolve and slightly change (and sometimes I have completely different events happening, but I'll be in a familiar setting where a previous dream took place).

In about a year, I'll only have 3 good dreams - and even those dreams are really... fucked up in their own special way. Some of them are really disturbing, and sometimes I'll refuse to go back to sleep, or I'll wake up sobbing if I have a particularly horrid nightmare. I'm the only one in my family with this issue, but I'm not sure if this is abnormal - to have so many nightmares?

It's somewhat normal, but yeah, I agree with scotty4444. I've had nightmares all of my life too. I started with noticing mexican food did it...then certain "similar" foods did it...eventually I realized the spice cumin caused all my night time torment.

Seek some professional help, this is obviously not normal. I don't think your diet is soley to blame, I mean, my diet is terrible, but I still have nice dreams.

Believe it or not, your diet can dramatically affect what you dream about, especially if there is a chance you may be developing diabetes. Spicy food and foods high in sugar before bed can really mess with you. Sometimes when we have nightmares, its our bodies way of telling us that something is out of whack and needs attention, especially if we have no idea that there is something out of whack. Try keeping track of what you eat and when you eat it and see if that illuminates anything.
