Is it normal that i’m depressed one day then optimistic the next?

One day I’ll feel like I’m okay enough and that there’s some hope for the future, then I’ll go into a deep state of depression and not want to leave my bedroom or see anyone. Then a few days later I’ll be talkative and think about my dreams and plans for the future, then a few days later those plans mean nothing and I don’t see a point in living anymore. It goes back and forth sometimes, but other times I’m just extremely deperessed. I never go for a long period of time being extremely optimistic. Is this normal?

I'm almost 20 and still have the same stuff going on. I think it's normal. Don't go getting labeled bipolar. Shrinks will gladly give you that label and take your money. That's the business they are in.

Unless your life is severely fucked up by your emotions you are ok.

I didn't know what you meant, that's why I asked for clarification.

If its nothing extreme, its normal, probably a part of aging. But if its extreme, frequent and you are surprised by your own behaviors and is affecting your everyday activities, it could be bipolar disorder, it " causes frequent mood swings, periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood."

    • I’m only 18 so I’m not sure it could be “aging”. And it’s kind of like a mix of long periods of depression then suddenly a day or two of being extremely upbeat, followed by a long period of depression again. What does that mean?

I meant aging as in you are aging from childhood to adulthood, during that period lots of adolescents complain about mixed periods of depression and excitements, so if its that its noting to worry about. Older people (usually 40+) who have them (that is sudden mood swings) and this really affects their life style are often diagnosed with "bipolar disorder", go read about it if you don't understand what it is but your symptoms are similar to that, but given how young you are its very unlikely and its just a part of your progress into adulthood, and by the time you are in your 20s and start working to earn a living you should get past that, good-luck...

I'm this way too. Shrinks want to label it and call me stuff but screw that. I am just a moody girl. It's fine.
