Is it normal that homophobes irritate me?

Why do so many people make an issue over gay and lesbian people? Sexual preference is something most of us are compelled to, so how is it fair to make fun of or ostrasize people who are gay or lesbian? Why can't the majority of people who are straight and homophobic just get over themselves and live and let live? I think it's because homophobes are latent homosexuals and being too involved or too near a gay person threatens their ability to adequately continue to hide their true colours. I don't think a lot of homophobes consciously realise they are latent homosexuals, but it might be a natural reaction that occurs in the subconscious to ensure their standing among their peers. Whatever their beef is, I wish they'd lay off homosexual people and just try to understand what a dreadful battle they must have to endure when coming out and how terrible they must feel when trying to get used to being different from the natural order of things. It seems with all our advancement, people haven't become any more enlightened than they were a 1000 years ago. I get so annoyed that I think I am homophobia phobic!

Some people are also attracted to siblings, animals, etc. Just because you want to have sex with someone/something doesn't mean you should.

I think homosexuality is a dysfunction, but we are forced to accept it as being normal (well society is anyway, I'm not).

I don't know about homophobic people being gay themselves, but I think they are stupid and I find them extremely irritating as well. I have broken up with two guys in the past because they made homophobic comments - I just thought yuck, what an idiot if I accidentally had kids with this guy the kids would be retards. Basically homophobic people are to me the equivalent of someone insisting that the earth is flat. Just total effin' idiots. They just irritate the hell out of me. The worst part is that they assume that other people are homophobic too - I usually tell them that I don't share that same prejudice and I am not interested in listening to their opinions on the matter, and then I usually leave the room because I feel so disgusted that I don't even want to be near the person any more.

i totally agree with (99% of) your comment. Idk about homophobes thinking/assuming the rest of 'us' are homophobes as well though. I think its more that they are 'shocked'/surprised to hear that we, in fact, do NOT agree with them 'against' the homosexual population, and therefore, become indignant, etc. Something else that irritates me as well, is ppl who are "wishy-washy" about the subject. They will claim/say that they have no problem with homosexual ppl UNLESS.... (the homosexual does this, or does that, or if... ) WTF. Either you are fine with homosexuals in more-or-less ALL aspects (allow them to and/or think they should have rights just like everyone else, etc.) or you don't agree with or have a problem, etc. with homosexuals.

  • WOW! Thank you. I do agree with you that not all homophobic people are homosexual. But it certainly is food for thought. It would be like saying that all racists secretly love the race they purport to hate. Yeah, I get that isn't the case. I do agree to a certain degree that we should love other enough to educate each other. However, what happens when you get bigots that refuse to be educated or change their mindsets towards matters such as these? In my country, being gay or lesbian is still very much considered a sin and our people use derogatory terms abundantly. Some of the gay people I have known are actually very nice people who are "normal" except for their sexual preference. What is normal these days anyway?

I too, confess to having been homophobic at a stage, that was until I realised that I was bisexual. Quite a turn of events that, isn't it?

Thanks for your motivational reply, it definately gives me a lot to consider.

Intolerant of intolerance HA you are all such hypocrites. It's perfectly natural for men to feel uncomfortable around homesexuals because of our desire to be masculine. We want to feel that we are what we are meant to be and have a healthy fear of appearing too feminine and thus unattractive to the opposite sex. That being said I have gay friends, am comfortable with my and their sexuality but it doesn't change the natural feelings most men have towards gays. My gay friends know how I feel and I openly talk about what bothers me about the way some gays act, political correctness, and the gay agenda. They understand, those that don't idc about, they're not my friends

"Now, ask yourself if your wife / gf takes contraceptives, or if you have had sex wearing a condom, or even when the last time you mastubated was... If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you must realise that God saw fit to punish Onan by death for spilling his seed on the ground and failing to procreate"

That verse is not anti-masturbation. Onan was punished because at that time he was supposed to be impregnating his brother's widow, but instead he was spilling his semen on the ground.

There are homophobes because they are scared of getting bum raped by aggressive homos. They are just trying to protect their bottoms from rectal spelunkers with their anti-homoismness.

I agree with you on this topic. that is one thing that i am sensitive about is someone making fun of or judging homosexuals. everyone is equal in my eyes. no matter who your attracted to you should have the right to live a normal and happy life. whos right is it to get involved in another human beings personal life? i agree with you . you made a great point

Isn't it odd how a lot of homophobic politicians turn out to be homosexual themselves? It's like they're trying to turn the attention away from themselves by pretending(?) to hate who they are.

Actually 1000 years ago homosexuals were persecuted, tortured and burned alive. We're not as enlightened as we were 2000 years ago.

Homosexuality was primarily outlawed in the Bible and possibly by some other religious sects. I am not a Christain, I am not religious, and as far as I'm concerned, the Bible and most religions promote hatred, prejudice and murder of anyone who is different and does not follow their laws. That to me is hypocrisy and bigotry. I do not accept laws based in antiquity that ignore the basic rights of human beings based on their beliefs. Who are they to prescribe their belief system to the rest of the world, citing that anyone who does not follow their system of belief to be punishable by death or war? Homosexuality is as old as the human race and if we cannot accept something that is natural to some of us, then we are the one's at fault for ignoring what comes naturally to some.

You are a bigot and I feel sorry for you because you think you have the right to sit in judgement of others based on what they feel or practice or believe. Have you sat down today to ask yourself what you do that may be unacceptable to those around you? There is also a quote in the bible referring to "onanism" - in Genesis. Consider this :

"Many Christian groups, especially Roman Catholicism, have subsequently cited the Onan narrative as justification for bans on both masturbation and coitus interruptus, and, since medieval times, have also used it to justify a prohibition against contraception. This view – that wasted seed refers to masturbation – was upheld by many early rabbis. However, the Levitical regulations concerning ejaculation, whether as a result of heterosexual intercourse[15] or not,[16] merely prescribe a ritual washing, and remaining ritually impure until the next day began on the following evening." - Wikipedia

Now, ask yourself if your wife / gf takes contraceptives, or if you have had sex wearing a condom, or even when the last time you mastubated was... If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you must realise that God saw fit to punish Onan by death for spilling his seed on the ground and failing to procreate. That is a law based in antiquity, much the same as God's laws banning homosexuality or sodomy if you will, were.

Thus, do you have the right to judge?

"We're not as enlightened as we were 2000 years ago."

That to me implies that you feel we should still be practising such torturous barbarity today. NOT as enlightened? If you read that again, what do you interpret? I interpret that it means we were wiser to be persecuting them than to be accepting them. If you made a gramatical error than I apologise profusely to you.

LOL. Now that I re-read what I wrote I can totally see how someone could read it like that. To be clear, I didn't mean it the way you thought.
I think people today are ridiculously homophobic and that homosexuals should have equal rights and be able to live the way they want.

Most anti-sodomy laws in Western countries originated from a Judeo-Christian world-view established from the Bible. The Biblical book of Leviticus says: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them."[6] The New Testament has been said to condemn Sodomy; the biblical book of Romans says, "Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen 26 for this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the women and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error 28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. 2:1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things." (Rom. 1:24-2:1)." quoted from Wikipedia.

Actually, 1000 years ago, homosexuality was an accepted practice in many nations. Kings used to happily bonk young boys all the time. Richard The Lion Heart was also said to be homosexual.

A sodomy law is a law that defines certain sexual acts as sex crimes. The precise sexual acts meant by the term sodomy are rarely spelled out in the law, but are typically understood by courts to include any sexual act which does not lead to procreation. It also has a range of similar euphemisms.[1] These acts typically include oral sex, anal sex and zoophilia; in practice such laws have rarely been enforced against heterosexual couples.[2]

Such laws have roots in antiquity, and are linked to religious proscriptions against certain sex acts. Contemporary supporters of sodomy laws argue that there are additional reasons for retaining them.

"Sodomy laws can be found around the world. Today, consensual homosexual acts between adults are illegal in about 70 out of the 195 countries of the world;[3] in 40 of these, only male-male sex is outlawed.[4] This number has been declining since the second half of the 20th century.
      History
The Middle Assyrian Law Codes (1075 BC) state: If a man have intercourse with his brother-in-arms, they shall turn him into a eunuch. This is the earliest known law condemning the act of male to male intercourse in the military.[5] The Lex Scantinia was written by the Romans. It includes laws restricting homosexual acts, but not banning the behavior. Utilizing male slaves as homosexual sex objects was not outlawed as long as the slave was on the receiving end.

  • A homophobia phobic? Well said! Like being intolerant to intolerance!

Its fine to be angry because there are victims - very real victims - of this prejudice. And it is rampant. Anger is normal when it is about people truly being unfair. And homophobes are haters. There is nothing nice about it and no way to whitewash it.

  • bazwell

Your irritation to prejudice towards a particular group of people is quite normal, and perhaps a positive reaction. I would encourage you to let go of that mindset however (that all homophobes are really subconsciously sexually attracted to the same sex). In truth, prejudiced ideas are sufficiently negative on their own, and do not require a reaction formation to exist. Essentially, homophobia has more to do (most of the time, I surmise) with lack of information, tolerance and acceptance; than it does with homoerotic feelings.

My suggestion, turn your irritation into patience and love. I will confess that I myself once felt that anything remotely related to homosexual interactions was filthy, dysfunctional and ultimately sacrilegeous. Now, I know better; but only because I was able to learn from kind patient people, who loved me despite by prejudiced ideas. You can be part of the solution like these people...don't contribute to the anger, intolerance and hate.

    best of luck

  • I totally agree with you! It angers me so much when people hate on gay people! They were BORN like that! I have a friend who hates gays and her family beats up anyone who is in there family. And that damn hate to gays in the church! It just disturbs me so much that I hate myself for being a catholic.

All of this is very strange because I myself am not gay however I enjoy reading and watching boy x boy stuff (I'm a girl).

Homophobes almost always have latent homosexual desires themselves. Study after study, after study has proven this "stereotype" to be a truth. The most condemning is a Michigan State University study that measured men's penis size during various testing which included men showing homophobic views vs. those who were fine with other's sexuality, both groups all identified as "straight". After being shown various men's bodies, genitals, male interaction, etc.. 70% of the homophobic group had erections while those who were tolerant of gays had only a 10% erection rate. Amazingly enough, even though the men knew they had penis measuring wires/sensors on throughout the testing the homophobes then denied afterwards it had happened when asked, "did any of the pictures arouse you"?

LOL! Gotta love the denials. The nice thing to remember is that homophobes almost to the very last one end up living miserable lives. They can't be honest with themselves about their sexuality, and thus have no chance in a long-term, emotionally satisfying relationship. And yes they get what they have coming to them. Karma, ain't it grand?

    • Awesome reply. You're so right about the fact that they will never live satisfying and honest lives. I could never figure out what was bugging me until I thought it over good and proper, went deep into my feelings and reviewed my past, got honest with myself and admitted I was bisexual. Now, the funny thing is that I'm comfortable around gay and lesbian people, I don't really practice my preference as I am married, but I no longer have issues about any of it. I just accept people the way they are, it has taken the blinkers off me in a huge way. Anyway, thanks for that very informative reply, it was interesting.
