Is it normal that he was offended by a fake bomb?

Im in a band and when we play live we wear miscelanious outfits. One of them is a cyber punk theme where we put wires and computer parts on clothes. I made mine out of an army jacket I purchased at goodwill and put the wires and chips on it. Anyways I wear these outfits to bars and other random things for fun. The other day I was wearing the cyberpunk army jacket in the bank and everyone was staring at me like they thought it was a bomb. I found this funny as I noticed it did look like a bomb vest. Tonight I was wearing it again at the bar and some guy came up to me and asks "what the F*** is that your wearing?" to which I replied "its a bomb" He flipped out and stated that hes in the army and that he was angered that I would say that. I told him I was just joking and its not really a bomb but he started acting as if he was going to fight me. Now I was sure he could have kicked my ass as he was in the military but I thought of it as I would win either way if he did. either the %1 chance I kicked his ass, or the %99 chance he kicked my ass and people would stop him before he killed me and he would go to jail and get discharged for kicking a guys ass for wearing a vest he was offended by (meaning he still lost). Anyways I took it off out of respect after he explained that he has seen his buddies get blown up by vests like these while at war. I figured he probablly had PTSD from the army which I was understanding that it brought him bad memories. Now I also have friends and family members in the army who never were offended by this. One army buddy who even dressed like this with us to shows. What I'm wondering is if it is normal that this guy acted this way?

    If he has PTSD, you're lucky that's all that happened. :/ My friend knows someone who got back from the army a year or so ago... he freaked out one night while they were hanging out and slammed her head through a mirror. Didn't remember any of it, in his mind he was back on the battlefield.

    Everyone is effected differently by war, that's the simplest answer I can give you.

      THIS. Some of them who come back, well they don't come back completely human. I say this in the nicest possible way. The trauma these guys go through, combined with the drugs some of them are put on, is enough to break any good human being. OP should be glad he came out of there in one piece. O_O;

        The "nicest way possible" to say that people with PTSD aren't "completely human" is still very hurtful.

            I understand what you were trying to say, I think. It just hit me kind of hard. See, while I was never diagnosed with PTSD (I think my doctor was reluctant to make the diagnosis while I was uninsured and struggling financially), I went through a period when I had flashbacks, frequent nightmares, and night terrors. I still have trouble sometimes. It's rape and abuse related, not war related, but it's related enough that your comment bothered me.

            If you meant what I think you meant, which is that soldiers come back scarred, changed, and sometimes very psychologically damaged, and it's unreasonable to expect them to be unaffected, then I agree with you.

              Yes, that's what I meant, though I said it much more bluntly.

              I really didn't mean to hurt you though, and for that, I would like to apologize.

              These soldiers though, they have it much, much worse than I could ever imagine. That's one of the reasons why I am against the war. Good, optimistic young people become damaged, middle-aged veterans... :(

    To be honest, if I saw you wearing what looked like a bomb I would freak out! I don't think I would approach you but I think I would leave the place I was in.
    People are scared of bombs. It's rational to be scared of something that could kill you.

    • and what exactly makes you think that? Im not against the military or anything. In fact Im supportive of the military and have several friends and family members in the military. To me it seems that people look into things too much and associate the fake bomb joke with terrorism. People in the US can make bombs too and use them for robbing banks and other crime. It doesnt mean Im supporting al-caida or however its spelt. Anything can look bad if you look into it too much.

        But you didn't think for a second that someone would be offended by what you wore. The fact that you had to ask this question just screams out you need to be face kicked

        It's just kind of... insensitive.You wouldn't walk around waving a fake (but real looking) shotgun at people, would you? And then for you to actually wonder why this guy was offended...
