Is it normal that he asked for my last name

I was at my job as a cashier and some guy around 50 asked me what my last name and how to spell it, he also asked for my moms maiden name, i told him because i thought he knee me and was trying to figure out who i was but i didnt realize that until he left. is it normal that he did that and why??
