Is it normal that friends matter more to me than family?

I've never understood why people act as though family matters more than friendship does. Families are the people that we've been stuck with due to genetics; friends are the people we actually reach out to and want to love and be loved by. I feel much closer to my friend than I do my family.

I voted not normal. If you are blessed to be born in a solid, healthy non abusive or cruel family then naturally your disposition would not seem normal. If like many people here, your family is filled with drunks, flakes, or just cruel evil people then yeah, you would be closer to your friends. Some don't have a choice but to build strong allies and communities outside the family just to have a basic sense of love and belonging. Just my 2 cents.

I dont think it's normal as such but my closest family are my step dad, his ex girlfriend and their two children. Of course I see them as my dad, sisters and step mum. I dislike my biological family a lot though so am thankful I found loving family in those who are not blood related.

My parents were such a pain with their constant expectations, haranguing, and micro-management that I left home at age 18 and never talked to them again.
