Is it normal that food tastes different outside?

... and by different, I mean worse. I get a weird taste in my mouth whenever I go outside while I'm eating something. I can't really describe it. It's like a bad aftertaste whenever I open my mouth.. like I'm tasting the air or something. It happens every time I eat outside. Is it normal?

Eating al fresco certainly isn't my cup of tea either. I found that if I ate outside, I wouldn't be able to fully taste the food that I was eating.

This happens to me sometimes. Most smells make my stomach twist. It doesn't matter if they're good or bad. If it's a food smell I often have to fight myself from vomiting! Something, like coffee or flavours can enhance my food quite a bit.

Perhaps your sensory receptors are intermingling - meaning, what you smell is having an effect on what you taste. I've done a study on this particular subject before, and the results support what you've stated above. Whenever you go outside to eat, the scents of that particular environment are probably causing you to taste your food differently. My guess is that you have a very finely-tuned sense of smell. Another hypothesis is the placebo effect; maybe this incident only happened once, but because of that one time, you've tricked your own taste buds into tasting things that aren't really there. A number of things could be contributing to this problem. If it really concerns you, or becomes cumbersome, I'd see a doctor.
