Is it normal that close-mindedness annoys me ??

Hiya,

I've known lots of people who won't do anything different, won't drive anywhere they aren't sure of, say they don't like whole genres of music, etc. They're only in their 20s and 40s and there's no reason why they can't try anything new! is it normal that this type of thing really annoys me??

I used to be like this myself (which is probably why) then I went to a concert – a different one from what I was used to (a folk one) –- and found I loved it, so much so that I actually preferred it to what I was listening to before (heavy metal and heavy metal only) even though I do still like listening to that.

The thought that I might have ended up missing said concert makes me feel ill (seriously, it wakes me up at night in a cold sweat)

What do you think??

I get criticised for the opposite. In a restaurant, I always want to try something I've never had before. Or try out a weird film that may be terrible but may be great. Same with music, books, and most things really. My friends think it's an act.

I love watching random independent films, just for something different! That and the sense of accomplishment when I see a great movie that nobody else has heard of. (silly I know)

    • Are you a mirror version of me? How did you escape the other dimension?!

I was scrabbling around in the back of a wardrobe and then suddenly... whoosh!

Got one myself recently. I can't even begin to describe the places I have fallen out of that sucker into!

I am not for being close minded but why are we going to make people leave the comfort zone? I mean what use is it. Maybe they are happy staying in the country, place, house, area they are living in. Telling them to move every month and saying they are stupid for not doing so is very close minded. Some people like stability.

It's like this: I have been alive a long time, and by now I have done my experimenting so I have a favorite composer, 3-4 favorite foods, favorite authors, etc. It is utterly stupid to still feel one has to be open-minded about eating Indian vindalooed liver when one has found out one is not only allergic to liver but also can't stand the spiciness of vindaloo.

Plus, if you are too open-minded then you are saying you have no taste, nothing pleases/displeases you, that "it's all the same". NO, it's not all the same. Some things inherently (for each person) have greater significance, in that rap music and Beethoven are not both equally relevant to the history of the world within my worldview, for example. Do not try to make me feel guilty for deciding for Beethoven (not my favorite composer, but an example that anyone would understand, because my favorite is quite esoteric).

I have done my spate of being "liberal-minded"; now I get to choose the particular sensations and experiences I prefer to surround myself with.

I agree. And when people refuse to make new friends, just because they didn't know you to begin with? I can not grasp that concept at all.

Yeah, I think I feel like you. Like, I used to be pretty closed minded myself. I used to listen to only hip-hop and R&B because I felt that that was expected of me as an African American, and I was always tired of people saying that I wasn't black enough, but then I came out of that shell, and I started listening to TONS of different genres and doing my own thing. I'm very open minded about everything now, and I can't stand people who are not. And now, I really don't care what people think, and personally, I think they shouldn't be so closed minded all the time.

I don't mind people that are close minded and want to stay in their comfort zones. I will, however, usually not be as good of friends with them because I am extremely active and always on the go! I like to have people around me that are like minded!

Yeah its normal. Everybody is like that to some degree. Just go with the flow and you should find that there are more people that undertsand you.

There's nothing wrong with living in your comfort zone if that's what you want to do. Some people like trying new things, other people don't. It isn't anything to get annoyed about if everyone's happy doing what they want to do.

If you think they're missing out, then it's their loss and not yours. Some people don't feel any need to try new things though; not everyone enjoys exploring new opportunities. Don't be annoyed by other people's personal choices that don't affect you.

    Yes it's normal.

I normally ask my roomies to go somewhere and they just want to sit and read their manga or watch their anime normally. I don't want to go by myself when it's not always safe.

I love listening to different kinds of music. But you'll never get me to like full on rap or hip-hop. I like some country, I love most rock/metal. I've been listening to some techno music lately. I like some folk music too, and some jazz and classical. I also like celtic music. Ok I like variety...

I have a list of things I want to do before I die so I can have variety in my life. :)

    Normal.
I've been accused of being that way by my ex, in my defense I wasn't going to go in to the middle of the woods with a guy who is no longer an EMT for unspecified reasons ...

Other than that I dont have the time or the money to do cool shit. A lot of my friends my age that have time and money (generally because of their parents) give me flack for that.
