Is it normal that adele is a magnet for hatred?

It is well known that Adele is a most fine singer, but why is she so frequently lampooned? Is it normal for undeserving celebrities to become the target elect for the wrath of the masses? Hell, even I was tempted to make a fat joke about her gravitational pull of haters and I'm supposed to be defending her.

I think she has a beautiful voice and she is an attractive lady.

People hate her because shes not one of those skinny bitches or a crazy whore like Nicki Minaj.

I like Adele because her songs are so full of soul. I'm listening to "I'll Be Waiting" as I type this. Who cares that she's not thin, I think she's perfect, any other opinions? Oh well, choke on my nuts.

    That is all.

It's because she's fat and successful, and some people think that is a reasonable justification to take the piss.

It's unfortunate, considering Adele actually has talent. There are a lot of talentless fucks in the music biz wielding nothing but the power of the $ that deserve the hate far more than this girl.

I personally couldn't care less about her appearance, but I can totally see how she might get derided regarding her artistic merit. She's basically Amy Winehouse made bland and safe for Lite FM-loving masses. Fucking baby boomers.

    • If we only consider the music, I don't think there was anything that much more original or exciting about Amy Winehouse compared to Adele. They were both very good songwriters, and Winehouse was probably a slightly better singer (not by much, mind you). To say that Adele is "made bland and safe" gives her a disservice, because she's evidently not a pre-packaged product who's just been manufactured by an industry to make money (if she was, they'd have chosen someone more traditionally good-looking and not let her write her own songs). I don't see what makes a song like "Set Fire to the Rain" any more "safe" than a song like "Rehab", to be honest.

If anything, Amy Winehouse was just riding the wave of the vintage, soulful, Motown-influenced trend to the same extent Adele is riding the back of the stripped-down piano pop trend. Just because her style of pop wasn't quite as well-trodden ground as Adele's doesn't mean it much more unique per se :P

I love Adele. She's an amazing singer and one of the only talented musicians in the mainstream industry now days. She's not even fat. Yeah. She's got some meat on her. There's no denying that, but she isn't huge to the point that she just looks unhealthy. But there's always gonna be people that hate. I suppose that's just something that comes with fame.

Regardless of whether she is fat or not, she has a beautiful voice and that's what really matters. I don't listen to the radio anymore but, judging by the last time I heard it, she's the one of the only pop musicians who actually sings anymore and has actual instruments in her music (not just the push of a button or whatever the hell they do to make some poppy noise) Listen to Nikki Minaj. Listen to Katy Perry and Kesha. They don't even sing. Adele very talented and her music makes you feel good. Well, makes me feel good anyway. Few musicians of modern pop are actually willing to make "music" anymore. To me they just throw together a party beat, Someone speaking in the background and call it a song.

She got where she is on pure talent. Not flashing her boobs and using that robotic effect to hide how bad her voice is like other so called singers.

She is way overrated for a singer that has absolutely no range.

I don't think it's right for people to make fun of her weight, but lets be honest here, she is not a top tier performer. I would turn things around and say, maybe she's getting TOO MUCH praise for the talent that she actually has.

    • It's a shame in that case that most of the negative things people say about her are about her weight, not her ability as a singer. She doesn't have as much range as a lot of singers, but I think her voice has a really good tone. She also writes all her own songs, which a lot of pop singers don't do, and they're generally good songs. As an artist I think she deserves her success (and she certainly deserves it more than almost anyone who has had similar success), although you may disagree.

Because size discrimination is one of the largest and currently most socially acceptable form of ridicule. It's horrible. She is beautiful. She is talented. She needs love and respect.

People get confused when they see someone of a larger size on the music channels. Especially women.
Makes her an easy target for idiots.

People may focus on her weight due to the fact that it's the flaw that's easiest to latch onto. Her music isn't horrible (not a fan), she doesn't seem like a terrible person, BUT she is overweight. People in the spotlight always get every detail of their lives criticized. The fact that her weight is the go-to is telling of how petty you have to be to find a flaw worth criticizing.

As long as you're a human being, people will always find a reason to hate you. You just have to see things as they are and realize that life isn't about being what people want you to be.

Just means she's doing something right. super stars aren't super stars until they have a king string of haters behind them...... Unless they're Justin Beiber..

Ha! That gravitational pull thing made me laugh, although I feel a bit guilty about that.:P

I really don't know. You see a lot of people complaining how mainstream musicians (and actors, etc.) are fake, so you'd think a "real" person wouldn't get so much hate.

I think when someone becomes massively popular, there tends to be a backlash of people who feel they need to pull it down to size or something. She's an easy target, I guess. As are Twilight and Justin Bieber. Just confusing to me that the "fake" and "talentless" celebrities (like Bieber) are insulted by being called fake and talentless, yet when someone fairly talented and "real" comes along, they criticise her for not fitting a little mold of what's considered attractive (and if she did she'd no doubt be called fake for it). Blah, people are confusing!:S Although, I sense that I'm massively off with this one.

    • I think that's certainly a big part of it (and now I want to make a joke about Adele being "big"... I think it must be a getting worse :P). Because people in the media tend to be treated with equal praise, maybe people in general are losing their ability to discern the celebrities who are actually worthy of praise from those who aren't. That would fit in exactly with what you're saying.

I certainly have no idea what I'm talking about here, so your guess is as good as mine. People tend to hold celebrities up to a much higher standard than everyone else (and maybe they should, since they're such influential role models), and it looks like a lot of them just can't win. You're either too fat or too thin, too shy or too arrogant, too posh or too much of a chav... walking the line must be very difficult and I don't envy them. It seems as if the celebrities who are least criticised are the ones who appear most like "normal people" - comedians are a good example. How can a musician or an actor even appear like a "normal person" when they get so much constant media attention, so how can they ever be liked? Hmm.
