Is it normal that a teenager gets a time out in the corner?

Recently I failed my chemistry test (barely) and I had lied about studying and my dad was ridiculously mad at me for it and yet he didn't even ground me, he just said that grounding didn't work anymore and he grabbed my arm and made me stand in the corner of the living room with my 'nose in the corner' for a long time. He didn't stay in the room but he walked around cleaning or something. Then after a long time he told me to go do homework. I don't think a 17-year-old girl should get corner time, it's juvenile. I am graduating this year but I am supposed to still live at home because we only live a few minutes from the college I am going to probably (hopefully) go to. But I don't want to stay here if I'm going to get "corner time" as a punishment any time I do something wrong! He says he wants to talk about it after dinner, and I am going to tell him that grounding does work and we should keep doing it (and promise to study more and all that)

Is it normal for a teenager to get time out like this?

  • He sounds fed up with your juvenile behaviour and doesn't want you to be a lying failure. He must be expecting you to act more maturely and grown up, and you've let him down.

Is it normal for him to give you 'corner time'?
    Probably not.

His disappointment in you or grounding you was not a strong enough deterrent, so what would be a better solution?

I love your response, Thisso :) Half cunty, half bitchy. I love it :)

  • I think it's normal. It's not abusive and the fact that you don't like it so much proves it is working. Soon you can move out if you don't like it.

i wouldn't say it is normal, but it sure seems like a just punishment and it isn't ridiculous like him beating the shit out of you.

you act like you're six, you get treated like you're six

you WANT to be grounded? grow up, you should want to be responsible and not need your daddy to tell you what's right or wrong anymore

It depends on you and your parents. Just learn from your mistakes and move on. Simply as that.

It's not exactly "normal" but it's not the weirdest thing I've heard of either. I grew up in a different time and I did my share of corner time. Unlike yours, mine was usually after dad whooped my ass with his belt so consider yourself lucky!

  • Its only normal if you are a butt slut.

no its not normal. but for someone your age to get "corner time" i would say your dad is pretty fucking upset with you and tried to let you know the nice way. If it was me, i'd drive you to school, get out the driver's side and scold you in front of everyone for; failing your chem test.

This girl is not applying her self at school. She has honesty issues. These are not good things. When you do bad things, you should be punished. A lot of parents would have grounded her for a week. Do you think she would have preferred that?

Time outs are a normal punishment.

When I was a kid it was between getting a spanking or a grounding for 3-to a week and I was grounded a lot. So I would have preferred a corner and not be punished days for something that was already over. I also was usually grounded for reason of my parents having a bad day not necessarily me doing anything.

Well, does it work? If so, it's at least effective.

Face it you aren't 18 yet so you're still a legal minor who's financially dependent and without legal emancipation from your parents aka you are still a child. Just stop being a baby and take the punishment

That is a juvinielle punishment for a 17 year old. I would recommend moving out when you graduate if you want to be treated like an adult.

Is your Dad related to Joan Crawford? He sounds depraved. Off with his head! orders the Queen! He shall have a time out, given from me. He will face the corner for 24 hours and not a second less. Damn him!

Corner time is better than being made to sit at the table for several hours into the night whilst you are lectured on how stupid and irresponsible you are and any reply is taken as a personal assault.

That said, if I were you, I would try and leave home. I know it's difficult these days and I got lucky when I was 19 and was able to leave home within 6 months of deciding to go to a college. Until then, I would bite my tongue and just play the game so you don't look ungrateful or anything like that!

That's nothing comparing my mom treated me when I was 18, she even chaired my arm very hard, and My arm was bleeding, just because I was flirting a girl in the internet, and I shut the chat window very quickly as I saw my mom walked in, because I don't want she see my secrete, but my mom thought I must did bad things because I didn't wanna her to see.

I think this is better than being grounding. I use to get grounded every weekend. Even if I did not do anything at all. Sometimes I think my parents just enjoyed doing it for some amusement. You want to be bored without a computer and television? I don't understand this at all. If he spanked you ok maybe I could see where you were annoyed but you got off easy.

What do you mean no where to go? I was a kid when they grounded me. If you are so offended they give you time out why don't you move than? If you claim you have somewhere else to go.

Yeh... I didn't write this post though. But I do still get corner time. It's supposed to weaken my spirit, but little do they know it only makes me stronger. I also have to wear a dunce hat. But the joke's on them, because I actually think it looks quite good ...so, you know.. (winning).

Well, during my Sophomore year in high school, my math teacher made one the bad students have a time out in the corner, so maybe this isn’t as uncommon as we once thought.
