Is it normal thanksgiving

Let's celebrate!

Everyone is invited. If you are unfamiliar with Thanksgiving, think of it as a giant potluck party. Come celebrate food with me. Bring what you can...but leave the baggage behind.

What are you bringing?

I make a mean pie 12
I have extra chairs 4
I'll bring the Tofurkey 3
gravy, there must be gravy 6
firewood for the bonfire 4
my dog, I never go anywhere without my dog 2
extra costumes, it's a costume party, right? 3
I've got a great hook-up, I'll bring some pot, I mean a pot of.... 8
I made cider! 0
dish soap, i burn everything but I'm great at washing dishes! 0
glue sticks, scissors, and magazines - were going to make collages! 2
sporting equipment, must play some type of game that involves a ball 5
musical instrument 5
something else, 14
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'll bring pot and stuffin muffins and broccoli with cheese sauce and my dogs and oh there's plenty of wood laying around here so I'll bring that too. And blankets and my candy van, in case anyone gets cold, tired, too drunk or... I think that should do it.

    • This looks a little like baggage.

I should have been more clear. I don't want to recreate an "American Thanksgiving." I want to have a celebration that involves eating los of food and having fun.

        • As well you should, and I am not asking you to forget the past. I am asking you to celebrate what is here now and share a meal with me.

Now if you happened to have contracted a case of small pox that is rotten luck. I'll ask you to stay behind but I'll make sure a plate of food is saved for you. And if you really come in only shoes and a hat with buckles, I will take pictures.

Pot, my b-b-bong, some Wal-Mart pie and some jiffy cornbread. I'd also be willing to make a Turkey. By that, I mean my husband will made the turkey. I can't cook worth a shit, it'd be a shame to waste a good Turkey on that.

I'll start by saying I love whoever keeps making polls like this. Regardless of the topic they're just so much fun to read through.

I'll bring firewood even though it was never a traditional Thanksgiving get together thing for my family. I love going to a party/get together where there is a bonfire. There's just something about sitting around a fire in the dark with the stars overhead that is just so relaxing. Especially after a big meal!

So far, all I got is the rhyme:

Five little turkeys standing at the door,
One waddled off, and then there were four.

Four little turkeys sitting near a tree,
One waddled off, and then there were three.

Three little turkeys with nothing to do,
One waddled off, and then there were two.

Two little turkeys in the morning sun,
One waddled off, and then there was one.

One little turkey better run away,
For soon it will be Thanksgiving Day.

When: The 4th Thursday in November.

How: People eating a ton of food and being "Thankful", spending time with loved ones.

Why: (school version) It marks a feast that was held by the Pilgrims (English settlers) and the Indians (Native Americans) back in 1621 where they became friends.

          The truth is very complicated.

    • Thanksgiving is also a way to celebrate the end of the harvest season. Winter is coming, it's a time to be thankful for what you have and enjoy the fruits of your labor. It's a time to gather and celebrate with those around you and eat.

Logically, I guess I should bring bacon because that's pretty much the meat people ate for every meal back then, but I know there were veggies back then too (referred to as nutjobs I think, and some still are) so I'll bring bread. I make a nice red pepper and onion bread with home-made butter.

Aye! Takes less than ten minutes to make and you can keep it for three months in the freezer. And it tastes better than anything you'll buy in the shops. Plus it only has one ingredient (plus a little salt, if you like). And it's easy to flavour it up with a few herbs.

I'm guessing that's the first fresh food they could lay their hands on? At the time, where they were from, it would have been customary to eat bacon (it's the only meat that would last for long periods because it's cured).

Apart from royalty, though, people ate a lot less meat than today. Humans in general have always eaten less meat than we modern people do. First we began to eat it every week and now most people eat it every day. From a historical perspective we look absolutely obsessed with flesh.

Also, weird fact, the first turkeys to be eaten for Thanksgiving were imported from England.
